Home tour: a mid-19th-century Victorian villa in West Chelsea, London reimagined for modern family life

Despite the exceptionally tight deadline—as the family was keen to move as soon as possible—the project involved a major renovation and extensive structural works, including a substantial basement excavation and extension, all completed within an ambitious timeframe.

“Every decision was carefully considered, ensuring that investment was directed towards the elements that would have the greatest impact on both family life and the long-term value of the property,” says Blyth, whose team completed the project before the children were due to start at a school nearby.

“They made decisions quickly and confidently, never second-guessed those decisions, and gave us the trust and freedom to execute the design as intended,” she continues. “That level of collaboration and trust was instrumental in bringing the project together within such a demanding timeframe.”

Alongside researching historic homes and architecture from the period to ensure the design felt authentic, Blyth drew inspiration from her travels, creating interiors that feel warm, sophisticated and effortlessly inviting.

“Some of my biggest sources of inspiration are cities like Istanbul, Venice, Rome, and Provence in France,” she shares. “Each of those places has such a strong sense of history, craftsmanship and character, and they all influence the way I think about interiors in different ways.”

Now spanning just over 5,000 sq ft across five storeys, the family home features a carefully considered side and rear extension.

An immediate sense of comfort and character is apparent from the moment one enters through the front door, where a sophisticated palette of neutral tones is enlivened by joyful pops of colour throughout the house.

Polished concrete flooring runs through key areas of the home, providing a durable, contemporary foundation suited to busy family life while retaining an air of understated elegance. This is paired with parquet-style timber flooring, which introduces warmth and a contrasting tactile quality underfoot.

Throughout the main living spaces, linen and bouclé upholstery bring softness and tactility to the furniture, while a heavily veined marble fireplace provides a dramatic focal point in the living room.

Here, crisp walls and neutral tones are brought to life through artwork in shades of blue, orange and yellow.

“Family life was at the heart of every decision,” Blyth explains. “Alongside the principal entertaining spaces, we introduced a cosy TV snug and a dedicated playroom, giving the children spaces of their own while allowing the adults to entertain and relax elsewhere in the house.”

In the kitchen, concrete floors, a substantial timber island and brushed stainless-steel cabinetry create a pared-back, tactile backdrop, punctuated by a vibrant lime-green abstract artwork.

Practicality was equally important. Utility rooms were incorporated on both the lower-ground floor and the children’s bedroom level, making everyday routines such as laundry and household management considerably easier for a busy family.

“We wanted the home to feel both elegant and practical—two qualities that shouldn’t be at odds, but so often are,” Blyth elaborates. “Ultimately we created a highly functional family home that feels calm, welcoming and effortlessly considered—a space designed around the rhythms of everyday life, without compromising on beauty or elegance.”

Blyth also designed a self-contained suite for the father, comprising a private study, dressing room and bathroom.

“He travels frequently for work and often has early starts,” she mentions. “This is a space where he can prepare for the day without disturbing the rest of the family.”

Throughout the family spaces, the design team created rooms that feel whimsical without sacrificing longevity. This is particularly evident in the dedicated children’s spaces, which bring a sense of playfulness and imagination to the home while remaining suited to the demands of everyday family life.

The playroom features bold, abstract wallpaper reminiscent of expressive brushstrokes in a spectrum of colours, while the bathroom combines a considered mix of tiles and richly veined marble finishes to create a sense of depth and luxury, offset by playful hand-painted murals.

“The clients weren’t afraid to embrace colour and pattern, but the overall aim was to create a home that feels joyful and characterful while remaining comfortable, practical and liveable every day,” Blyth says.

“One of my favourite details is the little pink bathroom designed for the daughters,” she concludes. “It’s playful and full of personality, while still sitting comfortably within the overall design language of the house.”
