Along the coastline of Muharraq, Bahrain, stands a villa that blends the elegance of a French boutique hotel and the distinctive architecture of Bahrain. Infused with a sense of undeniable glamour, the villa has undergone a renovation for a creative family of five, whose love of travel and vintage finds laid the foundation for a revitalised space.
The team behind the transformation, Qreative Design, is helmed by the architect and interior designer, Mohamed Alqari. One key inspiration was the traditional Bahraini household, which features an open layout and expansive corridors, locally known as ‘liwans’, that traditionally overlook the courtyards in Middle Eastern homes.
The original villa’s identity remained central to the Qreative team’s redesign. Rather than erasing its traditional character, Alqari elevated it through refined materials, carefully curating design elements that add a modern spin. The result speaks to what Alqari describes as “striking a balance between global elegance and local soul.”

Perhaps the project’s most striking achievement is the conservatory, created from what was once an unused terrace. Surrounded by glass and adopting a fresh, airy palette of blue and white, this garden room is the prime modernisation of traditional Bahraini architecture.
Custom travertine coffee tables anchor bespoke sofas and armchairs upholstered in fabrics from Sanderson, Penny Morrison and Fabricut, while lighting from Vaughan Designs, Pooky and David Hunt creates an atmospheric glow. A custom rug by Jaipur Rugs grounds the space with its neutral hue.

The main suite, fully reimagined during the renovation, embraces rich combinations of red, beige and burgundy floral patterns, colours loved by one of the homeowners. Bespoke wallpaper sourced from Papiers de Paris adds dimension to the space, complemented by refinished and retouched furniture pieces such as a chest of drawers, desk and nightstands. A custom-designed bed with bedding fabrics from Ralph Lauren and Trend anchors the room, while bespoke armchairs upholstered in Ralph Lauren fabrics provide comfortable seating after a long day.
The main bathroom continues the sophisticated palette with textured paint by Reach Paints and a custom vanity in Calacatta Arabescato marble. Green marble accents subtly complement the bedroom’s floral motif, adding layers of sophistication, while fixtures from Zucchetti and lighting from Visual Comfort, Pooky and Original BTC create a spa-like ambience. An antique French Gilt Pier Mirror, circa 1880, adds historical flair to complete the eye-catching vignette.

The other bedrooms, located on the newly-added second floor, received equally thoughtful treatment. One bedroom features soft greens and beiges with an equestrian theme woven through details like the desk and vintage artworks, enhanced by chinoiserie wallpaper from The Mural Source. Bespoke armchairs in Paolo Moschino fabrics and a custom bed create a sense of refinement that mirrors the flora and fauna of the conservatory.
In its bathroom, the green scheme continues with touches of pink in wallpaper by Cole & Son, layered with brass and marble for an air of luxury, while the dressing area remains clad in neutral shades to balance the room’s rich tones.

Another bedroom plays with shades of blue and hints of pink, taking inspiration from the charm and intrigue of fairytales. Whimsical wallpaper by Andrew Martin in collaboration with Kit Kemp is paired with nature-inspired fabrics on a bespoke bed and custom sofa upholstered in Zoffany fabric. The bathroom continues the blue palette, elevated with marble and brass accents.
Altogether, the home embodies an elevated yet inviting design story. The European influence is seen through Parisian wallpapers and nods to English country house furnishings, while reflecting the airy, open layouts of Bahrain’s traditional homes.
