Amid the bustling city of London and its most historic neighbourhoods stands a 4,000-square-foot apartment that effortlessly blends modern elegance with quiet gravitas. With its ornate proportions and celebration of the finest materials, Bergman Design House has blended the elements of an art gallery, members’ club and family sanctuary into one unforgettable space.
“The brief called for a whimsical yet enduring interior—a home designed not for trends, but for life,” shared designer Marie Soliman. In conversation with the clients, certain keywords emerged: classy, curated, airy, friendly and, above all, timeless. The homeowners had a unique taste in craftsmanship and art, seeking a refined retreat for their time in London.

The inspiration stemmed from the concept of an artist’s residence, blending the demands of contemporary life with playful, light-hearted sensibility. “At its core, the project is about collecting stories from around the world—objects, materials and artworks that age beautifully and accrue meaning over time,” Soliman shared. The design story thus included references to private members’ clubs and boutique European hotels, creating an environment that feels both intentionally indulgent and deeply personal. Some elements they wanted to retain were the London home’s generous ceiling heights and natural light filtering through the space.
The apartment unfolds as a spacious, flowing plan that balances formal and informal living areas. The generous kitchen features a bespoke breakfast corner, ensuring that the family’s daily rituals set the stage for a meaningful day together. Dedicated spaces for productivity and relaxation include a specialised den and home office, both designed with the intimacy and polish of an exclusive club.

Altogether, the material palette of the home is cocooned in softness: warm off-whites, stone hues, muted earth tones and gentle contrasts. “This palette allows materials and craftsmanship to take centre stage whilst ensuring longevity and adaptability as the family's collection grows,” Soliman explained. Against this neutral backdrop, extraordinary materials sourced from across Europe introduce texture and depth, from quartz moonstone and travertine to bespoke plasters and stonework by Marco Pacitti.
When asked where one of the home’s most memorable pieces lies, Soliman immediately pointed to the Marcin Rusak bar cabinet in the living room. This sculptural work is rooted, so to speak, in botanical experimentation, blurring the lines between art and furniture. Nearby, a 3D wall installation from Swiss studio Beyond adds dimension to the room that works in tandem with London’s seasonal changes.

The den and home office deserve particular attention, as these spaces reflect the homeowners’ daily habits. “The layering of materials and textures—never excessive, always intentional—best reflects our philosophy,” Soliman enthused. “It's where restraint meets richness, allowing the home to feel curated, not decorated.”
“This London residence is a celebration of collectibility, craftsmanship, and quiet luxury,” Soliman said. Amid the busyness of daily life, the space has become a cultural retreat with an emphasis on eye-catching materials that still fall within the same muted yet elevated palette. At the same time, each piece is chosen to evolve and be passed down through generations, upholding not only a personal history but the architectural legacy of such a notable space.
