With spaces for work, play and everything in between, this five-storey terrace house in East Coast by Prestige Global Designs balances relaxed elegance with everyday functionality

When Jeremy Tay of Prestige Global Designs was first approached to work on a home on Haig Lane, the property’s walls had not yet been erected. While the developer had built several houses along the same stretch, the homeowners turned to Tay to create something more personal.

“They already had a main contractor in mind,” he recalls. “But they wanted our input for space planning and interior selections.” At the heart of the design brief was the desire for a home that feels relaxed yet refined, where every corner serves a purpose.

The outcome is a five-storey terrace house that  delights at every turn. Inside, soaring spaces unfold gradually to reveal a layered interior that is calming, contemporary, and attuned to the rhythm of the homeowners’ daily lives.

A Sense of Discovery

Though it appears simple from the outside, the contemporary house is cleverly articulated into five levels, with an architectural layout that creates a sense of discovery as one moves through the home. The main entrance leads to a double-volume living room on what is technically the second level. A short flight of stairs reveals the first level, where the car park is located. Beyond the living room are the dining space, kitchen and bar.

Family Ties

The upper levels of the terrace house the private quarters: the daughter’s bedroom and study, the wife’s and husband’s individual home offices, and the master suite.

In the daughter’s bedroom, soft pink tones and whimsical details create a dreamy yet sophisticated space. He highlights that the room was designed to allow her to grow up along with the space.

The homeowners also requested that the wife’s study be next to the daughter’s. “The wife wanted the home office parked together with the daughter’s study room so she can watch over her or study together,” Tay explains. The studies have been designed next to each other, with a divider for privacy when required.

The terrace house’s master suite exudes a quiet luxury, with a custom walk-in wardrobe featuring curtain-inspired textures. “We wanted to extend the curtains’ texture all the way [to the wardrobe],”  Tay says, for a seamless look. The master bathroom features double sinks and a private outdoor shower. Blinds ensure privacy.

While the property doesn’t have a rooftop, multiple balconies feature throughout the residence. The design firm made full use of the space, adding an outdoor lounging area, swimming pool and gym.

“We initially wanted to place a beautiful plant or tree [to fill the space],” he explains. “But the homeowners are functional people.” Instead, he designed an outdoor gym area equipped with a power rack. The space also allows for a yoga mat, letting the wife practise yoga outdoors.

The top floor is dedicated to the husband’s home office, providing a secluded environment for focused work and private meetings. The sleek, modern space is infused with personality through his impressive collection of figurines, thoughtfully displayed to add a personal touch to the otherwise minimalist setting.

Connecting the Dots

Materials were carefully selected to evoke warmth and understated elegance, with subtle design touches unifying the interior spaces.

For example, as the homeowners did not want to design the living room “in an elaborative way”, Tay suggested using statement tiles instead. Leafy Hafary tiles are used in the living room, resembling a watercolour painting. Complementing the feature wall are butterfly pendant lights. The butterfly motifs and leaf-patterned tiles continue into the bar area, providing a cohesive design throughout the space.

The carpentry was fully customised, from the sleek kitchen cabinetry to the wardrobes. “The homeowners allowed us to design everything,” Tay remarks.

Lighting plays a pivotal role in shaping the terrace house’s ambience. In the dining area, Tay shares how he wanted to create a “celestial effect” by grouping two different pendant lights together. Furnishings-wise, various pieces were sourced from local brands, including Boulevard Outdoor Inspirations, Snow Globe Home, and Made & Make.

Reflecting on the eight-month project, Tay highlights the terrace house’s dining and living areas as his own favourite spaces as they allowed him to push the boundaries while also adhering to the homeowners’ needs and requirements. In essence, he believes the home embodies its owners’ personalities, with every element attesting to their individual lifestyles.
