How do you pick classic pieces you’ll never want to let go of? Erricson Wong, founder of Singapore furniture purveyor Made & Make, shares useful shopping tips for furnishing your home

With more than two decades of experience in the furniture design industry, Erricson Wong has seen many trends come and go. Over the years, Wong has honed his eye to find pieces that will stand the test of time; the founder of local furniture store Made & Make is also trained as an interior designer, and had initially started the company when he saw the limited designs for children’s furnishings in Singapore.

Soon, however, the selection at Made & Make evolved beyond the realm of baby cots and kids’ furniture. Its success inspired the firm to shift its focus to providing a wider range of products to furnish the entire house. Today, the store retails European and Asian brands with products that are versatile, unique and well-crafted. These include Danish brands Wendelbo and &Tradition, Czech glass lighting label Bomma, and Chinese furniture firm HC28, as well as the upcoming inclusion of Italian brands Alias Design and Nemo Lighting.

“We only work with brands that manufacture original designs and quality products to ensure their longevity,” shares Wong. Here, he advises on the details to look out for when shopping for your home.

When it comes to wooden furniture, Wong recommends looking out for designs that come with clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic. “This helps to ensure that the piece is timeless and easy to match with the interior. Pieces with less varied wood grains are usually more adaptable,” he says.

2. Set in Stone

Wong would often recommend furnishings with natural stone elements or tabletops to customers in celebration of their enduring appeal. But he cautions against choosing stone elements that feature a dramatic spectrum of hues as these may be more difficult to match with the rest of your interior scheme—especially if you decide to switch up the look of your home some years later. “Stone elements with less colour variation are more versatile,” he says.

Outdoor furnishings have gone beyond their functional look; these days, homeowners and designers alike are often spoilt for choice and can easily find designs that are modern, beautiful and easy to match with most design schemes. That said, Wong would recommend that you err on the side of caution to choose pieces in natural or earthy tones; these fail-safe designs will ensure that your outdoor pieces will look just as chic many years down the road.

4. Bright Ideas

While it may be tempting to choose ornate decorative lighting for your home, these designs could well lose their appeal once the trend dies down. So, when it comes to decorative lighting, Wong recommends selecting pieces with “less elaborate details and conventional forms for a timeless look”.
