From appliances to built-ins, here are 12 design trends unveiled at Milan Design Week 2022 setting the benchmark for stylish kitchens

After a four-year hiatus, EuroCucina made a stunning return to the Salone del Mobile Milano 2022 trade fair, held in Italy during Milan Design Week. Focusing on the culinary space, the highly anticipated bi-annual fair is considered the most important kitchen design exhibition in the world.

This year was particularly inspiring as over eighty exhibitors revealed a flurry of innovations that combine material experimentation, design, and technology. Best of all, the installations were crafted as multisensory experiences that reflect the growing importance of the culinary space in our abodes.

Here, we identify 12 key trends that will be shaping the way we make the kitchen the heart of our homes, as seen at EuroCucina, and other pop-up installations held in the city during Milan Design Week.

Less kitchen, more design

Luca Nichetto’s new project for Scavolini, as seen at the EuroCucina booth, blurs the boundaries between built-ins for the kitchen and the rest of the home with Jeometrica. A complete cabinetry solution characterised and inspired by art installations and informed by the study of graphic lines, this expressive collection ensures stylistic consistency throughout the home.

Customisation options allow for individual expression, an example being the wall panel which is available in different shapes and sizes and may be installed vertically or horizontally. The designer also designed chairs, stools, tables and lamps to complete the look.

Smeg’s appliances, available at Kitch, do not just add flair to a home in terms of design; their colourful collections are statement pieces.

The Smeg booth at the EuroCucina fair this year presented the restyling of their bright Portofino cookers among the new products, a tribute to the Liguria village. Renovated in technology and aesthetics, these cookers will be offered in 90, 120 and 150 cm sizes.

The now iconic FAB refrigerators also continue to delight with special colours and finishings that add a finishing touch and wow factor to any kitchen.

As the kitchen transcends its functional purpose, Cassina, available at Space Furniture, proposes the most fabulous accessories to decorate it with. Consider Italian/Netherlands-based designers, Formafantasma’s collection called Post Scriptum, a series of porcelain vessels marked with abstract signs realised by the Ginori 1735 master painters.

Another beauty is Cassina art director Patricia Urquiola’s Sestiere vases which explore traditional artisan Murano glass-workmanship techniques and adds a lovely splash of colour wherever they’re placed.

Behind closed doors

Evolving Dante Bonuccelli’s Tivalì kitchen for Dada, Yabu Pushelberg reinterprets the innovative enclosed kitchen with new technology and design. The concept behind Tivalì was to have a kitchen “box” that appears and disappears as if by magic when necessary.

Tivalì 2.0 appears as a large closed kitchen range concealed by two concertina doors which can fold back into the shape of the container thanks to sophisticated mechanisms. Pushleberg’s iteration also offers the option of a curved marble or stone worktop, a marble-covered back panel and an unconventionally designed set of shelves left open to show what is needed.

Singapore museum store Supermama added some Asian flair to Milan Design Week with an irresistibly colourful range of accessories featuring an eclectic cast of Singaporean local designers.

From the Breathing Batik lacquerware collection featuring tiffin carriers and boxes to Merlion Mambo, a quintet of glasses depicting Singapore’s national icon reimagined by illustrators, not forgetting A Taste To Remember, an exquisite bone china collection illustrated by Tye Sok Kuan with charming depictions of Chatterbox Chicken Rice and more pieces thoughtfully designed to blend the past and present for a global audience.

Seamless surfaces

Tatler Asia

Always at the cutting edge of technology, Gaggenau, available at BSH Home Appliances, presented the next generation of its award-winning full-surface induction cooktop. With an increased surface size spanning 90 cm, the cooktop is available with two choices of finish, installed flush and frameless, for imperceptible integration within the kitchen countertop.

The full surface induction cooktop allows up to 6 pans to be placed anywhere upon it and offers two cooking functions: professional and dynamic, for power level changes as and when the pan is moved. As seamless in functionality as it is in appearance.

Stosa Cucine’s minimalist kitchen, Metropolis, designed by Rossi & Co and presented at the EuroCucina booth, is ample proof that design, functionality and sustainability can exist harmoniously.

Created using Evolution System, Metropolis is a state-of-the-art kitchen that maximises storage, improves functionality and user-friendliness – and features generous and well-organised storage space. Metropolis is the first model in the Stosa range to have FSC-certified cabinets as standard.

Sign of the times

Tatler Asia

Presented at EuroCucina, Sign is Ernestomeda’s new kitchen model by architect and company art director Giuseppe Bavuso and one of the most versatile and customisable systems the brand has ever produced thus far. It offers a strikingly fresh open-space concept which suggests a revolutionary way of organising space in the kitchen.

By opening out to and merging with the other interiors, Sign becomes a true extension of the living room while showcasing a functionality close to professional standards. In blending seamlessly into the surrounding environment, Sign transcends its “service” role and plays an important part in furnishing the home.

Boffi’s elegant K14 kitchen system, designed by Norbert Wangen, was revisited by the kitchen brand’s innovations in aesthetics and functionality. This new iteration allows for large, overhanging worktops, thanks to an aluminium structure braced on the floor and a countertop bevelled at a 45° angle.

The K14 can also be equipped with the MDi Inalco induction cooktop and the new Inside System Track in extruded aluminium which can be integrated into the countertop.

As Bertazzoni celebrates its 140th birthday, the world’s longest-established family-owned household appliance company made it a year to remember with a stellar range of appliances.

Their Professional series was enriched with a freestanding cooker with a 103 litre over with 11 functions, a wall mount hood with a single motor offering three speeds, and a built-in oven designed by Bertazzoni and MM Design.

Best chosen in the Carbonio finish, this is the same paint applied to the most famous Italian luxury sports cars and sure to give a distinctive personality to the kitchen.

Wide open space

Tatler Asia

In another proposal that seeks to integrate the kitchen into the overall living space, the German brand Next125 proposes the modern Hideaway.

Offered in soft white matt lacquer fronts, the L-shaped design blends subtly into the room, creating an inviting, open-plan effect.  A pocket unit adjacent to the kitchen can be used here as a smart office, creating flowing transitions between the different areas of the home.

For ultimate customisation, Next125 also revised their colour concept with 18 satin and velvet matt lacquer shades within the three new colour categories - essential, elegant, and exceptional.

Swiss appliance brand V-Zug made an irrefutable case for appliances which are as aesthetically appealing as they are highly innovative, like their new Excellence line, where intuitive design elements such as the CircleSlider allow for precision and control.

The Combicooleer V6000 Supreme has soft-telescopic runners that allow the drawers to be fully extended and a freezing compartment which can be easily converted into a fridge (and back) thanks to the MonoFridge function.

The Freezer V6000 Supreme creates perfect conditions for convenience, quality of food at home and avoidance of food waste, while the Winecooler V6000 Supreme features newly designed climate control and new design possibilities with wooden colour finishes.
