Swiss designer Ubald Klug was inspired by the terraced fields of the Alps when he brought the Terrazza sofa to life in the early 1970s for furniture manufacturer De Sede. Designed to resemble the varying widths and depths of Swiss slopes and topography, the Terrazza—officially coined as the DS-1025—is a hit amongst celebrities and designers with its unconventional form.

Designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard as well as television personality Kylie Jenner favour the sofa for its dynamic allure, while supermodel Erin Wasson fell smitten with its unusual shape and had coveted the sofa for nearly a decade before finally getting her hands on an original piece shipped from the Czech Republic.

A single element is made up of seven graduated leather-wrapped cushions that are set on a rectangular wooden base; the sofa is typically purchased in sets of two or more to form a modular seating arrangement. While De Sede continues to produce the original design, many also turn to hunting for vintage secondhand models on auction sites due to its hefty price tag.

Following a request from Cesare Cassina, the founder of the established Italian brand, the Soriana sofa was designed in November 1969. It was presented at the Cologne trade show in January 1970, and immediately gained popularity with its soft contours and sophisticated form. However, the years after that saw the sofa losing popularity, causing Cassina to end production of the sofa in 1982.

In recent years, however, an upsurge of interest in the sofa has allowed it to make a comeback. With a metal structure that forms a brace for the biodegradable internal padding, the sofa now offers optimum comfort by eliminating the need for an internal support.
