"As a bona fide half-Hainanese, Kar Heong's Ipoh Chicken Rice & Hor Fun in SS14, Subang Jaya has my vote because they are one of the better chicken rice joints in the hood. Its poached chicken (you can choose between normal or kampung) is always tender and juicy, goes perfectly with its garlicky chilli sauce which gives just the right amount of kick. Its fragrant and fluffy yellow rice or silky smooth hor fun in flavourful clear broth paired with a side of fat and crunchy blanched bean sprouts is the perfect comfort food.

Pro tip: Always request for a serving of the ginger and garlic sauce! No Hainanese chicken rice is complete without it."

Choon Yien

"To be honest, I love every plate of chicken rice put in front of me but my favourite so far has been from Choon Yien in Section 17. Before the pandemic, there would be long queues well before 9am and for good reason. Their roast chicken never disappoints and goes so well with the chilli, which stands out for its punchy garlic flavours.

The portions are on the smaller side but that is great because it gives you the opportunity to order their equally delicious char siew and preserved vegetable soup."

Zheng Kee Chicken Rice

"Zheng Kee has my vote for the best chicken rice in this area, hands down. It's got all the essential dishes you need to complete a chicken rice meal. What they lack in brick walls, they more than make up for in classic Malaysian street food ambience and of course, taste. The chicken is plump and even the white meat is juicy, which is hard to come by.

The light soy sauce that comes with the steamed chicken is simply dreamy and when drizzled on the chicken dripping-coated rice, it is simply heaven. The chilli sauce is not too spicy but adds punch to the meal. Don't forget to get the double-boiled soup too!"

"My tastes are simple where chicken rice is concerned, so this chicken rice joint's signature dish does well for me by not straying far from the winning formula of flavourful, stock-rich rice and well-seasoned roasted chicken dunked in sauce."

Kum Kee Chicken Rice

"If you know, you know—especially if you live around the deeper parts of Cheras. Rather than a staple, Kum Kee’s chicken rice was more of an occasional treat for the family. I always go for the roast chicken; the skin is crisp and the meat isn’t dried out because of the thin gravy they serve alongside it. Also, while I know this is an article about chicken rice, do get the Cantonese pork knuckles in black vinegar as well."

"I love having chicken rice here for lunch. They dunk the chicken in iced water after cooking so it stays moist and the sauce complements the mild flavour of the chicken perfectly. The chilli sauce is also my favourite accompaniment."

"They serve one of the best Ipoh chicken rice in Kepong. You won't be able to stop eating when combined with the heavenly chilli and ginger sauce. I prefer steamed chicken as it is less dry."
