How do you think Porro resonates with the Malaysian and Southeast Asian market, with the recent launch of the mono-brand store in Malaysia?

Malaysia offers a thriving environment for Italian design, making it an ideal backdrop for Porro’s sophisticated and elegant style. The country’s iconic skyscrapers, luxurious hotels, and high-end residences serve as perfect settings for our modular systems and collections, allowing for endless possibilities to create dynamic and evolving atmospheres. 

Following successful launches in China, Korea, and India, the opening of the Porro mono-brand store in Kuala Lumpur further strengthens Porro’s presence in the Far East–a region that has become the brand’s most dynamic and rapidly growing market. 

Porro takes great pride in knowing that its meticulously crafted products, made in a green area between Milan and Como, are highly valued by the Asian market, where the passion and precision of Italian design continue to gain recognition.

Over its 100-year establishment, how has Porro balanced craftsmanship and technology in the creation of its furniture, especially when it comes to preserving Italian design heritage while keeping up with contemporary global trends?

From the very beginning, the traditional furniture culture of the area has coexisted with a strong drive for innovation; our collections have always worked to integrate industrial processes with manual craftsmanship. 

Important traditions of the history of furniture, such as carving, curved wood, and inlay–which the company has brought to light, and reinterpreted in a modern and abstract vision over the years–coexist with unique technologies, some of which are patented, to give even more consistency and value to the identity of the product.

How does Porro’s commitment to sustainability influence its design process specific to the luxury furniture market?

In 2000, we unveiled an architecturally innovative facility featuring glass façades that open to green spaces. Designed to operate using natural light for 80 per cent of the year, this facility improves employee well-being, minimises electricity usage, and reduces the company’s environmental footprint while enhancing quality control.

Furthermore, in 2018, Porro further revolutionised its production process by adopting a lean production model. This means our plant now operates with just-in-time manufacturing of custom panels, eliminating stockpiles of semi-finished goods and significantly reducing waste and energy consumption. 

Despite the modernised growth model driven by innovation, Porro has preserved the human touch in selecting and processing wood veneers, ensuring that craftsmanship and attention to detail remain at the heart of every product.

What are the design philosophies behind some of Porro’s most recent pieces?

This year, Porro has embarked on a collaboration with New York-based Japanese designer Nao Tamura, whose work blends memory and innovation by drawing on her Japanese heritage. 

The Origata collection, inspired by the ancient art of kimono-making, comprises a bench and console crafted from a single sheet of aluminium, cut and assembled using screws to minimise waste, mirroring the traditional process of creating kimonos from flat, rectangular fabric.

We’ve also teamed up for the first time with the GamFratesi duo, Danish designer Stine Gam and Italian designer Enrico Fratesi, for the Iro bed.

Featuring large, upholstered headboard cushions and a robust solid ash wood frame that showcases Porro’s craftsmanship in woodwork, Iro is a minimalist yet sophisticated design marked by its refined intimacy that further expands Porro’s exploration of bedroom furniture.

Looking ahead, how do you envision Porro’s design approach evolving to meet the changing lifestyles of modern-day homeowners?

Porro’s design ethos is rooted in the simplicity of shapes, which serves as the cornerstone of its timelessness. This simplicity is complemented by a continuous exploration of new materials and finishes, showcasing Porro’s unique ability to blend them innovatively.

A prime example of this approach is the Materic table designed by Piero Lissoni. Originally conceived in 2017 with the flexibility to use any material, the table was reimagined in 2022 to incorporate an oval shape and new wooden finishes, while maintaining its original concept.

The updated design meets contemporary aesthetic and functional needs, including a new colour option–an ash stained in a warm, enveloping brown shade. This choice not only accentuates the material’s texture, but also underscores Porro’s commitment to material research and tactile elegance.
