1. 838 Veliero by Franco Albini

Designed in 1940 by Italian Neo-Rationalist architect and designer Franco Albini for his home in Via De Togni, Milan, the iconic Veliero bookcase reinvents the concept of balance. Its two brass-tipped masts of tapering wood rest on a single point, while shelves seem to defy gravity under hangers of thin steel rods.
Translated as “sailboat,” later models of the Veliero have undergone structural enhancements. Cassina, the manufacturer, commissioned civil and nautical engineers to address the bookcase’s shaky structure.

An 80kg metal plinth concealed beneath the ash wood base was added for stability, and sturdier shelves featuring safety glass used in windscreens. With a painted tubular metal frame and stainless steel tie rods, the Veliero can now support weights of up to 600kg. This ensures both elegance and durability while displaying one’s wealth of books at home.
