Nevermore transforms this modern Penang condominium with an American Classic inspiration
Set along the Gurney Drive area in Penang, Setia V Residences is one of the island's most desirable addresses. The modern condo towers boast generously proportioned units and stunning views, drawing this family to acquire a 2,850 sq ft unit of their own.
Co-owned by a couple and their sister, the unit would serve as their home when they returned from Shanghai and the USA, respectively. In the meantime, their mother, who is based in Penang, would live there.
After conducting their market surveys, the couple approached Nevermore, the award-winning Penang-based interior design firm, to transform the bare unit. When the designers viewed the unit, they were impressed by the open plan, abundance of natural light and, of course, the stunning sea view.

“When we met, the client's main brief was an American Classic style as their sister who lives in the States would love such an interior,” recalls Chuah Say Yang, Nevermore Group's creative director.

As such, the designers set about seeing how they could include some of these elements in the property, like solid oak and marble.
To this end, Chuah says they were also inspired by Studio McGee, of Netflix's Dream Home Makeover fame, whose clean chic approach encapsulates the best of the modern rustic farmhouse style.

The designers went about adding these distinctive design elements throughout the space.
Wainscotting in a neutral colour was applied throughout the living areas, while solid oak panelling was installed as a feature ceiling over the dining area and an oversized marble top for the dry kitchen.

This continues in the bedrooms where a solid wood custom bunk bed was installed in the kid’s room, which hosts the sister's children when they return from the States.
Here a nautical theme adds character to the space with sisal ropes as detailing and a duck egg blue applied to the shiplap panelling.

Within this envelope, the designers chose large-scale furniture from King Living and a custom solid oak dining table, accessorised with suitable decor items sourced from Thailand.
The choice of lighting further underlines the style, like the minimalist iron chandelier in the living room and rustic twin pendant lights in the dining.

With the completion of the project, Chuah happily reports that the feedback has been positive, if slightly unexpected: “The clients are thrilled with the outcome. In fact, they wished that they spent more time in Penang now that they are back in Shanghai. Also, everyone is going after the bunk bed, no matter what their age.”
