Korean stars shine this week with Blackpink’s Rosé and CL attending the Met Gala and BTS being appointed as Special Presidential Envoys. Read on to find out more

It’s been a colourful week in the Korean entertainment scene this week, particularly with Blackpink’s Rose and CL making history as the first female K-pop artists to attend the Met Gala 2021 and BTS officially receiving their certificates and diplomatic passports as Special Presidential Envoys.

Several stars are also making their comeback including aespa, Super Junior’s D&E and Jo Byeong-gyu. Meanwhile, we also get more news of casting confirmations and offers including the Hyeri and Yoo Seung-ho-led drama and Bae Suzy's upcoming drama.

1. Hyeri, Yoo Seung-ho, Byun Woo-seok and Kang Mi-na confirmed for new historical romance drama

Girl’s Day Hyeri is booked this year as she stars in another drama after My Roommate is a Gumiho. She will be one of the main leads for the saeguk (historical) drama, Thinking of the Moon, When the Flowers Bloom opposite Yoo Seung-ho.

Now, the rest of the main cast has been announced which includes Byun Woo-seok from Record of Youth and Kang Mi-na from Hotel Del Luna and a member of the girl group, Gugudan.

The story will take place during the Joseon era when there were strict prohibition laws. Hyeri will be playing Kang Ro-seo, a struggling aristocratic woman who makes alcohol as the breadwinner of her family while Yoo Seung-ho will take on the role of inspector Nam Young from the Office of the Inspector-General. Byun Woo-seok will play crown prince, Lee Pyo who likes drinking so much. Finally, Kang Mi-na will play Han Ae-jin, the only daughter of a noble family.

2. Jung Eun-chae is joining Bae Suzy in new drama

Bae Suzy will be making her return to the small screen with Second Anna and joining her is The King: Eternal Monarch actress, Jung Chae-eun. Bae will play the titular role of Anna who has two different personalities due to Ripley’s Syndrome, a form of antisocial personality disorder. Meanwhile, Jung will play a woman who lives a perfect life until Bae Suzy’s character comes along.

The eight-episode series is scheduled to start filming later this year. It will be directed by Lee Joo-young who worked on the 2017 movie, Single Rider.

3. Super Junior sub-unit, D&E will be making a comeback in October

Super Junior’s fifth sub-unit, D&E which composes of Donghae and Eunhyuk will be making their comeback through a full-length album at the end of October. The sub-unit released their mini-album, Bad Blood in September 2020.

The two members first released their sub-unit single, Oppa Oppa in 2011 and this long-awaited comeback marks their 10th year as a unit. Donghae posted a photo with Eunhyuk on his Instagram with the caption, “Member’s pic, many years ago” as confirmation of their comeback.

4. BTS confirms collaboration with Coldplay on new song, accepts Special Presidential Envoys appointment at the Blue House

After months of speculation, BTS and Coldplay confirmed that they’ll be releasing a song together, titled My Universe. It will be released on September 24, ahead of Coldplay’s new album release on October 15.

The collaborative track will be in both English and Korean with BTS and Coldplay writing the lyrics. This collaboration also comes after BTS covered Coldplay’s Fix You for MTV Unplugged and Chris Martin’s visit to South Korea. BTS member, Jin also hinted at the collaboration saying, “I think it's well known by now, but there will be an announcement about working with a foreign artist. I’ve been a fan of them since I was young and Taehyung (V) has taken a polaroid picture of us together, which I keep on the back of my phone.”

In addition to this new track which shortly follows the Butter remix with Megan Thee Stallion, BTS is booked and busy. They recently went to the Blue House to be formally appointed as Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture by President Moon Jae-in who also handed each member with diplomatic passports and fountain pens. The group is set to fly to New York to attend the UN General Assembly Session from September 19–23 and will be accompanying the president. The group will be giving a speech and a video clip of their performance will be played.

The Korean government said that BTS’ attendance in the assembly is to “serve as a meaningful opportunity to expand communication with future generations around the world and draw their sympathy on major international issues.”

Last but not the least, the group also announced that they will be posting an online live-streaming event, BTS Permission to Dance on Stage on October 24 while the second season of their reality show, BTS in the Soop will air sometime in October.

5. EXO’s Kai is Seoul Fashion Week 2021's ambassador

EXO’s Kai is the face of Seoul Fashion Week which will take place from October 7–15. The organisers announced that “Our ambassador Kai has global recognition and fans all over the world. We expect that he will raise awareness about Seoul Fashion Week, as well as interest in Seoul.”

The Seoul Fashion Week will showcase the Spring Summer 2022 collections of various Korean brands and is set to capture Seoul’s "past-present-future" by taking its runway to historical and iconic landmarks. Due to the pandemic, the presentations will be made through 37 digital fashion films.

6. aespa is making a comeback with mini-album

aespa will be making their comeback through their first-ever mini album, Savage. SM Entertainment said that this will be the group’s first physical album since they made their debut last November. Slated for an October 5 release, the album will include six songs including the track title of the same name.

7. Blackpink’s Lisa’s ‘Lalisa’ sets a new YouTube record

Blackpink’s Lisa’s highly anticipated solo title track, Lalisa has smashed YouTube records, culminating over 70 million views within 24 hours—the most amount of views in 24 hours for a solo artist. With this, she breaks the record set by Taylor Swift’s 2019 song, Me which raked in over 60 million views. Within two days, the video has also garnered over 100 million views, making it the fastest music video by a soloist to do so.

8. Jo Byeong-gyu is confirmed to star in a new movie

Uncanny Counter star Jo Byeong-gyu will be making his return with a new movie titled, Even if I Die, One More Time. The story follows Jeon Woo-seok (Jo), a stuntman who wants to become an actor. A mysterious accident allows him to return to his high school days so he can think about his dream again.

The actor will show his acting prowess as the 40-year-old Jeon Woo-seok who suddenly turns into a high school student again. The movie is scheduled for release in 2022.

The actor was involved in a bullying scandal but has since been proven to be false. His agency, HB Entertainment confirmed that the alleged victims have submitted apology letters and admitted to spreading false information about the actor. They also announced that they will take legal action. The accusations come after Jo’s Netflix drama, Uncanny Counter had just finished airing which was well-received and catapulted Jo to superstar status after playing supporting roles.

9. Kim Seon-ho and YoonA are confirmed for rom-com film

It seems Kim Seon-ho will be making his movie debut with a rom-com movie opposite Girls Generation’s YoonA. The movie, 2 O’Clock Date is about a man and woman who live next to each other and will follow how their romance will unfold.

Kim and YoonA previously worked together as co-hosts of 2020 MBC Music Festival but this is the first time that they will be on an acting project together. YoonA will also reunite director Lee Seung Geun whom she had previously worked with for the movie, Exit. Filming for 2 O’Clock Date is scheduled to begin in March 2022.

10. Jung Hae-in in talks to star in new drama

Jung Hae-in proves to be one of the most sought-after actors today. On top of his drama alongside Blackpink’s Jisoo and the Netflix series, D.P., the actor is in talks to star in a new drama by Japanese director, Takashi Miike called Connect. A representative of his agency, FNC Entertainment confirmed that the actor has been offered a role and is currently reviewing it.

The movie will be about a man who has parts of his body stolen by organ hunters. He will not only seek to find them but also the person who receives the organ transplant.

Miike is one of Japan’s most well-known directors, having made over 100 movies and TV productions since 1991 such as Audition, Ichi the Killer and Blade of the Immortal. He has gained notoriety for depicting violence and pushing the extreme.

11. Blackpink’s Rosé and CL attend the Met Gala

Two K-pop female idols made history in the recent Met Gala: Blackpink’s Rosé and CL, member of the former girl group, 2ne1. Rosé attend the event as the global ambassador of Saint Laurent together with creative director, Anthony Vaccarello. She was decked in Saint Laurent—from her outfit simple yet stunning dress all the way to her jewellery pieces.

Meanwhile, CL was dressed in a unique mix of American denim texture and elements of a Korean hanbok, notably the horeum (the ribbon attached to the top of the hanbok) made by Alexander Wang. Her hairstyle is also a homage to her Korean roots as it was inspired by traditional Korean headpieces worn by the queens.
