This week, we got some exciting news from Blackpink’s Lisa and BTS’ ‘Butter’ remix with Megan Thee Stallion and so much more

The Korean music scene is buzzing with news this week! Blackpink’s Lisa finally announced the official release date of her highly-anticipated solo debut while Megan Thee Stallion's Butter remix with BTS will get to see the light of day. Meanwhile, Twice’s first English song also gets a release date while Seventeen is officially making their comeback in October.

K-drama land is relatively quiet this week as dramas airing towards the end of the year are finishing up finally. But we have news that Kang Dong-won is in talks to lead the remake of a Hong Kong movie.

1. Blackpink's Lisa announces debut solo album release date

Blackpink’s Lisa officially announced the release date of her debut solo album, titled Lalisa, the rapper’s real name. Releasing on September 10, the solo album promises to exude her charm and showcase a different side to her.

Her agency, YG Entertainment also shared the visual concept for the solo album where the Blackpink rapper is holding her long braided ponytail, dressed in a red outfit, with puffed sleeves and a matching choker.

2. Red Velvet’s Joy and Crush confirm their relationship

Red Velvet’s Joy and singer, Crush are confirmed to be dating. Their agencies, SM Entertainment and P Nation both commented that the two initially started off with a hoobae-sunbae (junior-senior) relationship but “recently began dating with good feelings toward each other”.

The two collaborated on the song Mayday last May and remained in touch afterwards, according to Korean media sources.

3. Seventeen is making a comeback this October

Seventeen is returning with a new album this October, according to a source from Pledis Entertainment. The comeback is the first since the members renewed their seven-year contract with the agency in July and is their first album in four months after Your Choice which was released in June.

We can expect updates and teasers to be released in the coming weeks.

4. Twice is releasing their first English song in October

In June, Twice announced that they will be releasing their first full English single, though no official release date was mentioned. This week, the girl group confirmed that the first English single, The Feels will drop on October 1. They also teased a snippet of the upcoming release with the members wearing preppy-looking outfits.

5. BTS teams up with Megan Thee Stallion for ‘Butter’ remix

After a long legal battle, Megan Thee Stallion’s remix of BTS’ Butter finally gets the green light for a release. Megan Thee Stallion’s label 1501 Certified Entertainment is blocking the release of the remix.

Megan Thee Stallion then sought legal intervention and filed a temporary restraining order against her label to allow her to release the remix. A Texas judge ruled that the WAP rapper is clear to release the Butter remix.

BTS’ label, Big Hit Music said that the upcoming remix celebrates BTS’ milestone as the chart-topping hit remained at number one on the Billboard Hot100 chart for nine straight weeks—the longest by any song released in 2021.

Megan Thee Stallion expressed her excitement on Twitter saying, “[You all] don't even understand how excited I am”. Butter ft. Megan Thee Stallion will be released on August 27.

6. BTS’ Jungkook is featured in Beyoncé’s Virgo Season Yearbook

Beyoncé shared her Virgo Season Yearbook on her website, which features 34 childhood pictures of celebrities and public figures including Nick Jonas, Amy Winehouse, Keke Palmer and many others. But much to the joy of many BTS fans, it also included Jungkook, the youngest member of the group.

The yearbook included a childhood photo of Jungkook alongside his birthday, September 1. Beyoncé also describes Jungkook as hard-working, creative, reliable, patient and kind.

7. Kang Dong-won is in talks to star in the remake of Hong Kong movie, ‘Accident’

Notable Korean actor and The Penninsula star Kang Dong-won is in talks to star in the remake of the Hong Kong movie, Accident. The 2009 action thriller film was produced by Johnnie To and starred Louis Koo and Richie Jen. It also competed at the 66th Venice International Film Festival.

Kang's agency, YG Entertainment, said that the actor is positively reviewing the casting offer for Brain, the lead character. Director Lee Yo-seob will be helming the remake and is scheduled to start filming later this year.

Accident follows a contract killer named Brain who barely survived after a contracted murder goes haywire. He begins to track down the mastermind behind the accident and start suspecting the people around him. The remake is set to keep the original story but make adjustments to fit the expectations of the Korean audience.

Kang recently wrapped up filming of Hirokazu Koreeda’s first Korean film, Baby, Box, Broker alongside actress-idol IU, Parasite’s Song Kang-ho and Kingdom’s Bae Doona.

8. Girl Group Solia disbands just five days after debuting

There are a lot of groups today that are inactive but have yet to formally disband. For new girl group Solia, their disbandment comes just five days after debuting. The five-member group made their debut on August 17 with the album, Dream. Prior to debuting, the members promoted their activities through their Instagram account from June 16.

On August 22, Space Music Entertainment said that “due to its circumstances,” they can “no longer be able to keep Solia going so [they] have to wrap up activities after having long discussions with the company”. The company nor the members didn’t disclose what those circumstances were but fans suspect it refers to their financial situation and inability to continue supporting the group.

Each member posted on their individual Instagram accounts about the unfortunate news but said that they remained thankful for the love and support they received.
