KGID composed restful spaces for this refined residence in Singapore while elevating its look with classic touches and decorative flourishes

There is elegance in simplicity, as most skilful interior designers would attest to. Some of the most beautiful spaces arise from a clever game of hide-and-seek—the creative team would aim to disguise some of the more obtrusive elements while creating a sleek, uncluttered interior that the clients will love. And so it was with this 1,313 sq ft apartment in Singapore’s Orchard Boulevard neighbourhood.

The abode’s poised look was realised by eponymous founders Karen and Kelvin Gan of KGID, who expertly augmented its most outstanding qualities to suit an expatriate couple.

As the clients’ holiday abode, the three-bedroom unit was to be designed by KGID as an inviting place that instantly feels like home, while featuring unique and tasteful details as part of its visually cohesive interior. In particular, the foyer area was to be redesigned to house the clients’ collection of shoes, thus keeping the entryway neat.

Other than requesting that focal points should be eye-catching but not overbearing, the homeowners essentially gave the designer couple free rein over this project.

When the designers first visited the site, they noticed the thick beams that lined all the window areas and sought to make these a seamless part of the interior design through the use of custom joinery and incorporate them into the new false ceiling design that conceals the wiring for the task and ambient lighting in the home.

The designers then selected a neutral colour scheme as well as metallic details for a luxurious touch, along with botanical-themed decorative elements to create a soothing atmosphere; the latter also affirm Singapore’s “garden city” fame and its tropical environment.

These include the handmade orchid-shaped clay ornaments in the foyer. Lit softly by overhead spotlights, these floral accents are set on a textured wall and help to create the feeling of “being in a spa”, as the homeowners happily put it.

A custom console houses the couple’s footwear in the foyer; this bespoke piece is matched with the Deknudt Ornato round mirror, which features gold-leaf detailing that imparts a luxurious touch.

The homeowners similarly admire how the designers applied fluted panels to the foyer and dining areas, which helped to soften the spaces in contrast to the other rectilinear details in the interior. These fluted panels help to elevate the look of the cabinet doors in the dining area, blending these functional elements into the overall design scheme seamlessly.

An elegant set of Artusi pendant lights by Melogranoblu from Million Lighting was handpicked by the clients together with the designers for the dining zone. Featuring a pink copper finish, these handblown glass lamps were selected for their understated look, and are among the homeowners’ favourite pieces.

A selection of furnishings from Royal Interiors and King Living contributes to the cosy setting in this abode. In the living area, for instance, an Opinion Ciatti XXX side table crafted in a 24k gold finish is paired with the silver-leaf Foliae table from the same brand. The cork wallpaper behind the sofa echoes the metallic detailing on the tables, bringing a subtle shine to the space.

A feature wall is clad in a Calacatta Gold slab from Kstone, which was chosen for its opulent yet elegant look. Downlights from Sol Luminaire in the living area, which are also incorporated into the bedrooms, bring a soft glow to the interior and highlight the tactile elements on the walls as well as the furnishings.

KGID imparted the same sense of calm to the more intimate spaces and applied muted shades of grey and brown to the bedrooms. Take the master suite for instance, where the full-height headboard is dressed in a richly textured fabric panel with a champagne-gold trimming. Here, a bespoke dressing table is designed to house drawers to keep the wife’s cosmetics, jewellery and other beauty tools well organised. The sculptural Lema Oculus mirror adds another opulent touch.

Coming to fruition in August 2023, the renovation took two and a half months to complete. The outcome was greeted with much delight by the clients, and the design team couldn’t be more proud of the result. The overall look is welcoming, bright and tranquil; the apartment has become a home away from home for the couple and a place they enjoy returning to.
