Mosh Interior designs a dream multigenerational abode that is equal parts cosy, stylish and utterly inviting

What makes a house truly feel like home sweet home? That answer might be found in the ways you can thoughtfully design and decorate your abode, while considering the lifestyle and unique needs of each inhabitant. For a recent project in Singapore, the founder of Mosh Interior, Shermaine Maena Ong, sought to turn a 2,885 sq ft apartment into a restful haven for a family of three generations.

“They wanted their space to be spacious, modern and sleek,” says Ong, who teamed up with senior designer Yann Guo to transform the interior of this four-bedroom property. “Some of the key materials that we agreed upon were light woodgrain complemented with cream colours, and matched with marble and metals.”

Ong believes in creating liveable and beautiful homes their owners will be proud of. This can be seen in the ways that the firm utilises clever spatial planning and meticulous detailing to create well-structured and innovative spaces.

“We place a huge emphasis on creating solutions that cater to our clients’ lifestyle and inspire them,” she says. The Singapore-based practice provides interior design, project management and interior styling services, and has realised stunning renovations for houses and apartments of various scales and sizes across the years.

The family were already well familiar with the furniture designs and styles they admire, so it was a rewarding and enjoyable experience all around for the designers to select the furnishings together with the occupants. “The clients have a good knowledge of furniture products, and they appreciate good furniture and are willing to purchase as long as the pieces are to their liking; so we introduced to them furniture stores of the quality they admire,” shares Ong. “The furnishings play an important role in this space, hence the sourcing of the furniture took as much time as the interior design process.”

Material World

The tone is set right from the start at the entryway, where guests are greeted by the sight of a pair of grand doors clad in a dark walnut-like veneer; the surrounding walls and ceiling feature a similar dark-hued finish. To the left of the main doors is a powder room, which is incorporated into the entryway, bearing the same dark-stained wood finish for a unified look. Large format tiles were specially sourced for the powder room to minimise the grout lines and to create
an almost seamless look.

The entryway leads to a bright and welcoming foyer where metal trimmings elevate the look of the custom light-wood joinery. Here, the backs of the open shelves are clad in gold-toned metal sheets to create an eye-catching sheen; this material is also applied onto the TV console in the living room to visually connect the two areas.

“For the TV console, the main focus is the use of the subtle white Volakas marble that’s paired with black Nero Marquina marble to create a regal feel. The wood strips dance around the subtle white marble to create a decorative effect,” says Ong. “The gold metal plates that clad the open shelves add to the luxurious feel of the living room, while creating a nice reflection that is more interesting than the typical glass mirror.”

To echo the visual cues in this open-plan space, the pantry area that connects the living and dining room also features matching metalwork on the ceiling-hung shelves.

Among the notable furniture in this home is the Poltrona Frau Let It Be sofa from Proof Living, which anchors the look of the living room. As the owners particularly admire the designs of Italian brand Poltrona Frau, they also acquired the Archibald armchair and ottoman by the Tolentino-based firm to complete the beautiful tableau.

For the dining area, the clients selected Poliform, an Italian brand carried by Space Furniture in Singapore that they’re familiar with. Key pieces include the Concorde dining table, which is paired with the Ventura dining chairs, also from Poliform. The double-tiered Lee Broom Aurora Ring pendant light creates a focal point above the dining table, while a pair of vibrant artworks brings dynamism to the interior design.

The detailing in ancillary spaces such as the pantry is as exquisite; the metalwork for the ceiling-hung shelves was made to match the metallic trimmings in the open-plan living and dining areas. A marble countertop partially “slices” through the cabinetry in the pantry. It also draws attention to the vanity table that features edges clad in steel in an eye-catching gold finish.

Hide and Seek

In contrast to the bright and light hues in the open-plan living room, the bedrooms take on a darker scheme to create cocooning environments for each inhabitant. This is accomplished through the use of earthy hues and dark wood, with the linear design of the joinery accentuated by backlighting.

The detailing keeps the design interesting, while playing up the exquisite details of the joinery. All together, the apartment presents the perfect frame for life, and a place where the family can create and celebrate treasured memories in.
