House Tour: A Strata Bungalow Show Unit In Goodwood Grand With Tropical Accents And Colourful Spaces

Colour, texture and detail are showcased to good effect in this sophisticated strata bungalow in Goodwood Grand, designed by Singapore studio KGID

Known for its work on luxury apartments, landed properties and show units, local firm KGID specialises in creating stylish urban sanctuaries. This project for Tong Eng Group is a prime example. The developer wanted to present ideas of high-end living to potential buyers of the last of eight strata bungalow units in the Goodwood Grand estate.

“As this show unit is an actual house, our design needed to look impressive but also be functional,” says Kelvin Gan, who leads KGID with his wife Karen. The couple were tasked to furnish and style the three-storey dwelling, which features living and dining areas, four bedrooms, and a roof terrace. The challenge was to create individualistic spaces within the 5,300sqft abode that also came together as a whole. The designers imagined a design-savvy client, and the interior attests to that with a modern, sophisticated scheme.

The open-plan living and dining areas epitomise this approach. The full-height display shelves and the book-matched travertine onyx wall are among the highlights on the first storey. The curves of the custom-designed rugs soften the architecture’s hard lines. Anchoring the space is a cosy, inviting sofa.

In the dining room, a Nemo Crown Major chandelier designed by Jehs + Laub illuminates the circular dining table. Its graphic lines, inspired by the outline of a snow crystal, are grand and poetic. Its gilt framework is well matched by a bespoke gold artwork in this double-volume space.

While the use of richly textured wallpaper and materials such as marble and timber evokes an overall sense of luxury, the spaces are also highly practical. “In every room, we provided a study or dresser, as we knew that most occupants require them. Their proportions needed to be well planned in order not to clutter each bedroom,” says Karen.

In one bedroom, the firm installed a multipurpose day bed behind the study desk. “We designed a day bed concept so it can be a guest room or a kid’s room. We even catered for a pull-out bed for when the child’s friends are staying over,” Kelvin elaborates.

In another instance, a small bedroom on the second storey could not accommodate a large desk. The designers ingeniously added a pouf next to the side table to create an alcove that accommodates a laptop or can be used as a vanity area.

Cushions and curtains in strong shades, along with Chinese calligraphy, bring a regal air to the master bedroom. The junior master bedroom has a more youthful vibe, with blush and copper cushions and a crimson carpet.

On the roof terrace, KGID designed a cosy nook from which to take in the scenery. Overhead, a gazebo mitigates the sun’s heat and glare; underfoot, an outdoor rug provides softness. Throughout the house, the couple’s meticulous attention to detail is palpable. The result is an appealing interior that evoke a charming and comfortable way of life.
