Ooi Boon Seong and Lisa Ong of OD&A share tips on how to transform an outdoor area into a stylish and relaxing space

“A stylish and relaxing outdoor space is intentionally curated and designed to suit its users,” says Ooi Boon Seong, who runs award-winning design consultancy OD&A with Lisa Ong.

“We think that outdoor spaces are an important extension of the living areas as they have the potential to be social gathering spots, a safe environment where children can run free, or just a perfect little nook for much-needed self-rejuvenating ‘me-time'. The possibilities are truly endless.”

To this end, Ooi recommends carefully defining private zones from publicly accessible ones when designing the layout of your outdoor space so practical aspects like accessibility to repairmen or gardeners do not disrupt your zen.

When curating pieces to create your outdoor haven, the designers explain that the arrangement and selection of the right furniture must align with how the space is intended to be used. They also suggest taking into account what mood the furniture pieces exude, how they contribute to the flow of the space, and how they affect the overall look and feel.
