These are the decor trends that are now past their expiry date

It's important to be aware of the latest trends, but equally important to recognise when a trend has overstayed its welcome.

While midcentury-modern designs like sleek Eames furniture or Carl Hansen Wishbone chairs are timeless, others can make homes passé. Not just that, if you're considering selling your home, a home stuck in the past might actually lose some of its potential resale value.

Whether it's the carpeted staircase that was installed in the '90s or elaborate window treatments that you put up in your modern classical phase, we spot the five decor faux pas that

Back in the '80s, mirrored closet doors were a popular choice that added shine and sparkle to bedrooms of the yuppie era while also creating the illusion of a larger space. However, this feature has lost its favour in modern times.

These days, people are opting for more personalised options such as rolling farmhouse barn doors, French closet doors, and pocket or bifold doors, which add character to a peaceful bedroom without making it appear outdated.

Update your closet doors; this small gesture can significantly transform the entire appearance of a room and make it more attractive and inviting.

2. Elaborate window treatments

Homeowners nowadays aim to create a seamless transition between their indoor and outdoor spaces, and excessively ornate window treatments are no longer desirable since they obstruct the view of the outdoors.

Flashy and over-the-top window treatments are now considered outdated, so remove those '90s-style valances or trim the detailed fringe at the bottom of the roller shades. Keeping it simple will instantly update your windows—and your home.

3. Outdated appliances

When was the last time you laid eyes on white kitchen appliances? It was probably in a service apartment needing refurbishment or your grandmother's home. It is crucial to note the difference between a vintage aesthetic, as exemplified by the delightful Smeg fridge, and a lacklustre, timeworn appliance.

An outdated, oversized microwave fixed into the cabinet is an unmistakable indication of a tired kitchen area. It may not be the most modern option, even if it is still operational. Therefore, remove all such antiquated appliances and invest in chic new machines which not just look better, they may help your cooking process as well.

Wood isn't limited to just kitchens anymore. It's becoming increasingly popular throughout homes, even on stairs. Carpeted stairs, particularly those in beige, can appear worn out, especially if they are original to the house. Not to mention making them seem unappealing and unsanitary.

Removing the carpet will instantly update the stairs. Finish them with paint, stain, or a runner for a contemporary feel. If a complete renovation of your stairs isn't feasible, replace the old carpet with new, modern textured and tactile carpet patterns for a plush three-dimensional effect.

Remember the boho-chic trend of having mini chandeliers in the bathroom? Unfortunately, what looked decadent then now looks a bit kitsch. So opt for a simple new sconce to bring your bathroom up to date.

Quiet luxury is the new buzzword and for homes, this translates to minimalist globe sconces with crafted details as people gravitate towards subtlety.
