Feng shui master and TikTok virtuoso Cliff Tan (@dearmodern) shares his tips for manifesting love this season by evoking the right energy at home

“Feng shui affects the way you feel, think and behave. The art of feng shui, which is about optimising our spaces for ourselves, can therefore affect how you feel and how you react to things. This shapes how you project yourself to people, including potential partners. So says Cliff Tan, a beloved feng shui master creating phenomenal content on the topic across TikTok, Instagram and other platforms under @dearmodern.

For this year’s Valentine’s Day, Tan has partnered with dating app Bumble to gain a wider understanding of the needs of single Singaporeans looking for love, and how feng shui may help them manifest a healthy relationship. “When your surroundings are thoughtfully arranged according to feng shui principles, they can positively impact your mood and your feelings. While this does not promise that love will magically appear, creating a supportive environment can boost our spirits and inspire us to find love.”

So if you’re single and hoping to invite love into your home this year, read on for Tan’s excellent feng shui guide for a romantic 2024.

What is some feng shui advice you would give to singles but not to a couple living together?
It depends on whether you plan to stay single or not! If you are not yet ready for romantic love or to invite another person into your life, then the advice would be to arrange your spaces to foster personal love. For example, by creating a cosy, one-sided bed set-up.

If you do wish to find a partner, then a differing piece of advice would be to create clear space in your storage areas to signify that a partner can easily fit in. This would be completely opposite to my advice for a couple living together, in which case you actually want your storage to be nicely filled with the belongings of two.

Should singles living alone follow different feng shui principles compared to singles living with family?
Singles living alone usually have more personal space, which allows them to focus on external love more easily. Living with family, on the other hand, usually carries the weight of family expectations.

Singles living alone may simply follow the standard advice of creating space for two and having balance in their rooms, while singles living with family would have to add in an additional layer, creating the right environment to foster self-love and clarity on their personal desires before they are able to truly find the love that’s meant for them.

What are the most important areas of the house for singles to hone in on?
The bedroom is one of the most important spaces in a home since that is a personal, intimate and safe space where we spend most of our time.

Within the bedroom, we can focus on creating a love corner to display items that remind us of the beauty of love. In feng shui, the love corner is usually a corner visible from the bed and deep inside the room, away from the entrance, where you place objects that symbolise love. Some examples include a pair of mandarin ducks, a rose crystal, or flowers, but anything is possible so long as it reminds you of love.

Are there particular furnishings or items that singles looking for love should keep in their homes? How about items to get rid of?
Love is the coming together of people, which makes balance important. Always ensure that in all of your spaces, you create a sense of balance. For example, you can arrange your bed to have space on both sides and place bedside tables with table lamps on each side to signify this.

If you do not have space for this, you may use other things to represent space for two, such as a loveseat or two chairs.

Any layouts or arrangements singles who are looking for love should avoid in their homes?
Of course, avoid placing your bed pushed to a corner, this signifies that you are happy to be alone and do not want someone to join you, much like on a train where you place your bag on an adjacent seat hoping that someone does not join!

Layouts aside, objects also matter. An interesting statistic I found out through my collaboration with Bumble is that more than half of Singaporeans who have been in a relationship before still keep gifts from their exes, and almost a third still have their exes’ belongings. Even though these items and photos may be pretty or hold special memories for us, these memories may be equally heavy. These are things that singles should avoid keeping or at least not place too prominently in their homes.

Would you say that feng shui is gender-specific? And would singles in the queer community have to tweak their approach to feng shui?
In feng shui, there is this concept of yin and yang. Often people conveniently term women as yin and men as yang. However, when it comes to genders and roles, this may be more fluid than we think, where genders are neither absolute nor completely binding.

Ultimately, it is all about creating a sense of balance between partners. How one identifies oneself does not matter, but who they pair with does. Always be clear about who you are, and make it clear to prospective partners by being honest and upfront. Once you are true to yourself, the right love for you will come.

My advice is to focus on creating your own energy in your space, which will not only reinforce your identity but also invite your opposite to enter your space to create balance.

Is there an ideal time to implement feng shui at home, especially when seeking a relationship?
While feng shui does pay respect to time and direction, my advice to singles here is not to worry too much about auspicious dates or times. Often, this will cause worry and even become an excuse for singles to stay that way! So, release all inhibitions and allow yourself to seek love anytime you feel ready.

Can you share a bit about the overlap between feng shui and using dating apps?
There are numerous dating apps out there, and we know how some apps focus on casual encounters while others focus on love. While there is no right or wrong approach, there is a difference in energy levels.

Of the many apps, Bumble is an interesting example as it focuses on a more yin demographic and urges them to make the first move.

How can singles balance inviting various positives into their homes, such as prosperity and health, alongside love?
There are many aspects of feng shui, such as health, wealth, career, and love. The truth is that these all go hand in hand. Rather than choosing which one you want to attract, consider that career and money lead to well-being, which leads to a greater ability to love and better health, and only with good health can you build a career, and the cycle goes on. The way to identify the right principles is to see where you feel weakest and focus on that. This would be the easiest way to complete the balance.

Can you share some quick feng shui tips or principles specifically for singles?
While this may sound like a generic tip, your space should be clear of clutter. The only way someone can enter your life is if you make space for them—literally. Clear and organise your room so that it is free of clutter and ready to take in new things. A tidy and clean room will not only be more enjoyable but also allow positive energy to flow freely and stay within your space, not to mention make you feel more confident to invite someone over.

Besides creating a love corner and clearing your room, you can create an overall ambience that will make you think of love. This can be done with lighting. Avoid harsh, overhead lights or naked bulbs. Instead, use indirect, soft lighting, or even candles to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

A final interesting tip for singles is to not overdo the feng shui. Having too many things that remind you of love may be detrimental and remind you of how lonely you are, so it’s always about a balance. Ultimately, with everything that you do to your space, ensure that it looks balanced and beautiful to your eyes, and trust your instincts.

Last but not least, any feng shui tips for those who are not looking for romantic love but want to invite new and lasting friendships into their lives instead? My most important tip for anyone looking to invite lasting relationships into their lives this year—whether romantic or platonic—is to always prioritise your own well-being. Bumble shared with me that over a third of singles in Singapore are protecting their mental health by reframing how they date, which is great! Whether it’s friends or a romantic partner, a relationship can only form and blossom when we are in the right state of mind to develop one, whatever kind it may be.

Always ensure that you have understood your own emotional needs and mental well-being before moving forward and opening the door to let someone new in. This will lead to lasting relationships, which may be fluid enough to develop in or out of romance.

Ultimately, dating and forming new relationships should always be fun! So embrace the potential of new, kind connections by taking little steps to help refresh your safe space in the new year.
