What makes a design timeless? With its simple rounded form, the Volum lighting collection by Snøhetta feels like a breath of fresh air amid the busier decorative options around. Produced by Italian lighting brand Lodes, the minimalist dictum to reduce design to its purest form is clearly evident in its design.

“It’s in the details, it’s what you don’t see. It’s making the complex look easy,” says Marius Myking, director of product design at Snøhetta, an Oslo-headquartered international architecture and design practice. Since the launch of the Volum collection, which began with pendant lights, the lighting range has grown to include ceiling and table lamps and is also designed to be grouped together to form a striking cluster of suspension lamps.

That said, this collection does continue the trend wherein brands are teaming up with major architecture firms around the world. It’s easy to see why; some of the most famous mid-century lamp designs were indeed created by the most famous architects of their time, such as the instantly recognisable Arco lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and the Artichoke Lamp by Poul Henningsen.

Here, we highlight the lighting collections to covet, as designed by some of the most notable architecture practices of today.

Providing a 360-degree illumination was important to the design of the Lodes Volum collection. “At Snøhetta, we talk about prepositions a lot; how people are in relation with public spaces, below, beneath, next to and above. With that thinking, a lamp like this should be beautiful from any angle and illuminate a 360-degree glow,” shares Myking.

He adds: “Each of these top caps of the lamps has been custom-made for each lighting piece, in a seamless manner. And that may look easy, but it really [hides] a very technical solution within that [ensures] the lamp is upright.”

This lamp stands out simply with the sheer scale and volume, particularly for the larger versions—and hence its name—and offers 360-degree uniform illumination, making it well suited not only in homes but also in larger commercial spaces like restaurants and hotel lobbies.

This battery-powered lamp is a petite wonder, and available in a sprightly variety of colours. Designed by internationally renowned practice Foster + Partners, the Artemide lamp features a form inspired by the shape of thumb tacks that you might use to attach notes to a board or another surface, alluding to both the versatility and portability of this collection.

Made using recycled aluminum and suitable for indoor and outdoor use, the lamp also features an extruded anodised aluminium stem comprising a single LED and rechargeable power source that are easy to disassemble. An optimised diffuser ensures that the light is emitted evenly around the stem of the lamp, creating an ethereal look. The illumination from the lamp can be dimmed or brightened by using a discreet button on the stem of the lamp; each charge lasts up to 32 hours.

3. Delta Light High Line collection by MVRDV

The brief was to create something eye-catching, colourful and eco-conscious. And Dutch architecture firm MVRDV managed all of the above, while creating a memorable design for Belgian lighting brand Delta Light. Dubbed High Line, this collection is handmade with leftover aluminium scraps from Delta Light’s own production of profile lighting. The cube-like design combines various upcycled aluminium pieces, which are then dipped in bright shades that include pink, ochre, light green and light blue.

“A visit to Delta Light's showroom and factory showed an interesting contrast between the lighting in their showroom, and the factory where everything that goes into a luminaire was visible,” shares MVRDV founding partner Jacob van Rijs. “In particular, the stacks of aluminium profiles in various shades of white, silver, black, and gold proved to be a source of inspiration. The amazing details of these profiles are usually hidden inside the wall or ceiling; we wanted to make their beauty visible as the main feature of the new design.”
