A fun bubble-like lamp by Bjarke Ingels Group, a minimalist lighting collection by Snøhetta to colourful designs by MVRDV and Foster + Partners are among the clever designs we love
What makes a design timeless? With its simple rounded form, the Volum lighting collection by Snøhetta feels like a breath of fresh air amid the busier decorative options around. Produced by Italian lighting brand Lodes, the minimalist dictum to reduce design to its purest form is clearly evident in its design.
“It’s in the details, it’s what you don’t see. It’s making the complex look easy,” says Marius Myking, director of product design at Snøhetta, an Oslo-headquartered international architecture and design practice. Since the launch of the Volum collection, which began with pendant lights, the lighting range has grown to include ceiling and table lamps and is also designed to be grouped together to form a striking cluster of suspension lamps.
Don’t miss: Why Snøhetta believes that ‘architecture is always about people’
That said, this collection does continue the trend wherein brands are teaming up with major architecture firms around the world. It’s easy to see why; some of the most famous mid-century lamp designs were indeed created by the most famous architects of their time, such as the instantly recognisable Arco lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and the Artichoke Lamp by Poul Henningsen.
Here, we highlight the lighting collections to covet, as designed by some of the most notable architecture practices of today.
