Where to eat and drink in Cheras

Opened almost a decade ago, Ebony & Ivory Coffee remains one of the most popular cafés in all of Cheras. Satisfying rice bowls are this spot’s crowning glory, pairing Kurobuta pork loin with Japanese curry-drenched rice and paying homage to local cuisine with its Nyonya chicken and acar rice bowl. You’ll also be able to find Macao eggs on top of sourdough toast or served with rice, bonito flakes, and furikake.

Its dessert selection is just as impressive as its collection of savoury dishes, with its raspberry longan mascarpone torte, pandan sponge with coconut mousse, cempedak loaf, and taro cheesecake being notable highlights. Pair any meal here with a filter coffee with notes of orange and black tea, a cold brew coffee with plum syrup, or an iced Earl Grey milk tea. 

Tucked away in Cheras Business Centre is Yakitori Haki, a go-to for Japanese cuisine in the area. While this spot’s namesake may suggest it specialises in yakitori, diners can also expect a diverse menu of substantial plates. Start your meal with a fresh air-flown uni or a sashimi platter before tucking into a hotate don or saba shioyaki.

Its yakitori selection is a standout, though, housing skewers dressed in wasabi or plum, chicken liver yakitori, and beef teriyaki skewers. 

No day of food hunting would be complete without a visit to a neighbourhood café. A pet-friendly coffeehouse, Bond’s menu is just as inviting as its philosophy. Find specialty coffee here that you can pair with fluffy brioche French toast topped with strips of bacon, breakfast burgers crafted with homemade buns, satisfying rice bowls with crab and eggs, and creme brûlée burnt cheesecake.

If you can’t go a day without at least a slice of bread, House of Wheat is the place to go. This Cheras-based bakery offers fresh sourdough bread, sweet and savoury Danishes, and a pastry case full of treats. Substantial plates are also on offer, with two brunch and dinner menus.

Find house-cured gravlax on seeded sourdough, sourdough sandwiches, and soy yuzu pasta served cold. For dinner, pair buckwheat fried chicken or a croissant pizza with a refreshing cocktail. 

A haven for carnivores, Anne Elizabeth moonlights as both a protein-powered restaurant and a well-stocked deli. The eatery offers a lineup of made-to-order dishes that showcase its deli selection. Expect its signature charred pork belly, pork sausage platters, Australian ribeye steak, beef braised in Guinness, and chargrilled Spanish Iberico pork.

Diners can also take home their preferred cuts of meat, from pork and cranberry sausages to streaky Spanish bacon. 

Cantonese-style seafood is placed in the spotlight at Fish Market Cheras. Ideal for group dining, you’ll find multiple-course menus that cater to parties of all sizes. Order its steamed tiger grouper and French scallops with vermicelli and garlic or deep-fried Canadian lobster and salted egg Alaskan king grab when dining with a larger group.

A la carte dishes are also on the menu, with a crowd-favourite being Japanese oysters and steamed prawns. 

Nestled in Taman Midah, Cheras, Estate Coffeehouse has established itself as a must-visit when in the area. Its recently revamped menu brims with brunch favourites and inventive pasta dishes from savoury waffles to spaghetti paired with chimichurri and duck confit. You can also find a dish inspired by Japanese ochazuke, nasi lemak served with Japanese curry, and a big breakfast topped with a Scotch egg.

A laidback izakaya in Cheras, Hakata Izakaya offers a pub-style Japanese dining experience. Try a sashimi selection that showcases majuro, hamachi, and octopus or opt for a classic chicken katsu curry. As with any izakaya, you can also order a range of yakitori and grilled bar snacks that pair perfectly with a mug of beer or glass of sake. 

A minimalist café perfect for winding down, Aki’s Kohi offers and impressive variety of desserts, pastries and Japanese-inspired plates. Try its signature sea salt brownies and strawberry custard danishes, or opt for something savoury like a ham and cheese croissant.

You’ll also find a small lineup of udon dishes dressed with yuzu, kimchi, and shoyu smoked salmon, which you can have alongside matcha or caramel lattes.
