Located past downtown Kuala Lumpur, the expansive suburb of Cheras is home to an abundance of restaurants and cafés not many have visited. On the border of both Ampang and Kajang, Cheras may be known more for its shopping malls and maze of residential neighbourhoods but has recently seen an influx of contemporary brunch spots blossom in the area.

For those in search of classics with a twist, head to Belly. The restaurant melds classic Western dishes with Asian infusions. Find Szechuan-style duck confit, squid ink risotto topped with bonito flakes, and carbonara infused with fermented bean curd. 2. Ebony & Ivory Coffee

Opened almost a decade ago, Ebony & Ivory Coffee remains one of the most popular cafés in all of Cheras. Satisfying rice bowls are this spot’s crowning glory, pairing Kurobuta pork loin with Japanese curry-drenched rice and paying homage to local cuisine with its Nyonya chicken and acar rice bowl. You’ll also be able to find Macao eggs on top of sourdough toast or served with rice, bonito flakes, and furikake.
Its dessert selection is just as impressive as its collection of savoury dishes, with its raspberry longan mascarpone torte, pandan sponge with coconut mousse, cempedak loaf, and taro cheesecake being notable highlights. Pair any meal here with a filter coffee with notes of orange and black tea, a cold brew coffee with plum syrup, or an iced Earl Grey milk tea.

Tucked away in Cheras Business Centre is Yakitori Haki, a go-to for Japanese cuisine in the area. While this spot’s namesake may suggest it specialises in yakitori, diners can also expect a diverse menu of substantial plates. Start your meal with a fresh air-flown uni or a sashimi platter before tucking into a hotate don or saba shioyaki.
Its yakitori selection is a standout, though, housing skewers dressed in wasabi or plum, chicken liver yakitori, and beef teriyaki skewers.
