Our guide to the eateries that grill the best of the Japanese skewered special in the area

Yakitori, which refers explicitly to skewered chicken, belongs to the greater family of kushiyaki, the overall genre of skewered and grilled meats in Japan. Simple and to the point, yakitori is a staple in casual Japanese fare, populating the menus in many izakayas, where it is popularly paired with a chilly pint of beer. Recently, we have also seen the rise of some high-end yakitori or kushiyaki omakase experiences with chefs grilling and serving the best cuts and produce of the day.

In true izakaya fashion, Hamasho Yakitori offers the best rice bowls, grilled dishes, and highballs that promise to cool you down from the day's heat. You cannot miss its bonjiri, chicken wings, tsukune, and chicken skin on the yakitori front. Other stellar kushiyaki offerings include smoked duck, pork belly with miso, and shishamo (smelt).

Served with its special sweet and salty kushiyaki sauce, Kingu Kongu’s kushiyaki will prove to be a hit at your table. Our favourites on the menu include the special chicken tsukune (chicken meatball), Black Angus beef teriyaki, smoked duck, and beef tongue shioyaki. Perhaps the most famous of its offerings is its chouchin, unripe eggs with thigh and liver, which is mild and creamy in flavour. Non-chicken options include beef tongue, A5 Wagyu, pork neck, ginkgo nuts, and more.

There are also rice bowls and sides on the menu that you can choose from to supplement your meal, such as dashimaki tamago (Japanese omelette), baked potato salad, and yaki-onigiri (grilled rice balls). Those who want to leave it up to the chef should opt for its omakase course that comes with 12 skewers, enough to have you leaving the establishment full and satisfied.
