Falling this year on September 17, the Mid-Autumn Festival will be here before you know it. Mooncakes are the festival’s quintessential delicacy, symbolising unity and moonlit mid-autumn nights. 

Rich pastries encased in flaky, baked crusts or pillowy snow-skin exteriors stuffed with a variety of fillings make annual appearances, with hotels and restaurants across the country celebrating with their own collection of mooncakes.

Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur and Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur have unveiled a mooncake collection housed in a package with augmented reality features. Local artist Jaee Tee designed these gift boxes strewn with majestic dragons, butterflies, and lush spring blossoms. Scan the QR codes on these boxes and watch as the illustrations come to life. 

Pavillion Hotel’s Moonlit Majesty collection offers pandan lotus paste with single yolk, tiramisu lotus paste with caramel lava, and Nyonya red bean paste with salted mung bean filling until September 17. The Joyous Blossoms collection symbolises love and prosperity, housing traditional flavours from white lotus paste with yolk to yam lotus paste with yolk.

From the acclaimed Lai Po Heen comes Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur’s mooncake collection. Inspired by the ancient Chinese tale of the Jade Rabbit, each box serves as a reminder of selflessness and connection—virtues of the season. Baked mooncakes come flavoured with red bean paste, lotus paste with a single yolk, pumpkin with melon seed, and more.

Snow-skin mooncakes are also available, showcasing fillings of Musang King durian, yuzu ganache and hazelnut praline, coconut pandan ganache with roasted coconut, and pistachio cream cheese with white lotus paste.

The St Regis Kuala Lumpur’s mooncake collection pays homage to the hotel's founder, John Jacob Astor. Mooncakes can be found in trunks reminiscent of elegant suitcases, some adorned with Swarovski crystals. Lotus seed paste single yolk mooncakes are available in sets of four or eight, with an exclusive collaboration pairing the Classic Mooncake Trunk with a bottle of The Macallan Rare Cask.

In collaboration with mixed media artist Jaemy C, Hilton Kuala Lumpur’s mooncake collection comes housed in packaging decorated with contemporary calligraphy and dragon motifs. This series also takes shape with a second cylindrical gift box, with its lid transforming into a a traditional lantern.

Find traditional baked mooncakes filled with lotus paste and a single yolk, red bean with almond flakes, and pandan lotus paste. Guests can also expect snow-skin mooncakes infused with pure Musang King durian, a nasi lemak inspired XO sauce, and lotus paste and pumpkin lava.

Available from August 8 onwards, find a punchy snow-skin treat infused with ginger flower, calamansi jelly, and kaffir lime zest. The second flavour also draws on local flavours, seeing filling crafted with buah keluak, lotus paste, cashews, and dark chocolate ganache encased in a white chocolate skin.

To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown has launched its Lunar Treasures Mooncake Collection with time-honoured and contemporary flavours. Housed in a gift box inspired by the artwork of Alice Chang in Lady Yi’s Tea House, find mooncakes infused with red bean, green tea, white lotus, and more.

The hotel has introduced two new flavours this year including baked chocolate and baked Musang King mooncakes. Order this collection before August 18 and expect a 15 per cent discount.
