Local bartenders find inspiration from nostalgic local treats and drinks to celebrate the occasion

National Day is coming up next week and there is no better way to celebrate our nation’s 57th birthday than with a tipple in hand. Our favourite bars have come up with unique and local-inspired cocktails to celebrate the joyous occasion—and the choices are aplenty. Take your pick from Milo-tinis to sparkling calamansi and welcome the occasion by sipping on curated tipples with your loved ones.

1. Smoke & Mirrors

Smoke & Mirrors has collaborated with Botanist Gin to craft the sparkling calamansi for National Day. The bar’s version of the lime juice found in hawker centres is a refreshing mix of lime juice, Botanist Gin and prosecco. Take a sip and enjoy its citrus notes interwoven with fruity flavours. Better yet, enjoy the cocktail with the gin and tonic ice cocktail pops which come in flavours like bandung and sour plum—boosted, of course, by Botanist Gin. Available from August 9 to 31. 2. Kaarla

This contemporary Australian restaurant and bar is honouring the island’s upcoming birthday with a slew of Singaporean-inspired cocktails. Enjoy thirst-quenching concoctions like the Ondeh Ondeh Obsession. A nod to the beloved Nonya ondeh ondeh kueh, this cocktail is filled with the flavours of rum-infused pandan, spiced rum, coconut juice, coconut milk and gula Melaka syrup. For something more nostalgic, the Malty Madness is a boozy rendition of the beloved beverage, Milo. While the malty drink originated in Australia, it’s a staple drink enjoyed by Singaporeans during childhood. The grown-up version sees a medley of Courvoisier, cacao white and Milo powder. 3. Spago Bar & Lounge

7. Sol & Luna

Make a toast to Singapore with Sol & Luna’s Spiced Singapura and Wicked Chendol. The former is a spicy and aromatic cocktail comprising spice-infused falernum liqueur shaken with Ron Zacapa rum, cinnamon, pineapple juice and homemade cinnamon syrup. For something on the sweeter side, the latter is the Latin-European bistro’s interpretation of the beloved chendol dessert.
