This hybrid whisky is a blend of distinct new make spirits from Suntory’s distilleries in Scotland (Ardmore and Glen Garioch), Ireland (Cooley), Canada (Alberta), the US (Jim Beam) and Japan (Hakushu and Yamazaki). What makes this extremely special is that the characteristics of the various distilleries are preserved in this blend, which means you’ll get the heathery characters of Ardmore and Glen Garioch interspersed with the complexity of Cooley, smoothness of Alberta, and vibrancy of Jim Beam. The flavours are rounded off with spicy and woody notes.

Available at 1855 The Bottleshop.

Looking for a special rum to gift this Christmas? Consider Rockpool, created by four friends in Singapore using three- to five-year-old rums from Barbados and the Dominican Republic that were aged in American oak barrels. The resulting expression is deliciously balanced, its characters of vanilla and dried orange peel coming through with every sip, ending with a warm finish. It’s perfect for sipping (neat or iced), yet very mixable in cocktails such as mojitos and daiquiris. Apart from the taste, its design is also striking with bright colours, textures and patterns that hark back to the rum’s nautical beginnings.

7. Salted Plum Gin

Bring some festive cheer to your gin-loving friends with the Salted Plum Gin, concocted by Peddler’s Gin Company. While it was inspired by the classic sloe gin, the Peddler’s team infused it with salted plum, mulberry, hawthorne and osmanthus for three months, then aged it for another month in Spanish Olorosso sherry casks to give it rounded notes of vanilla and oak and a dry finish.

8. Gordon & MacPhail Private Collection 1952 from Glen Grant Distillery

It’s worth buying this whisky for the most special person in your life—or even for yourself. Created to honour the late Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee, the expression was matured for 70 years in first-fill sherry butt and was bottled on February 6 (the date the Queen ascended to the throne in 1952). It’s a sumptuous whisky, with aromas of toffee and orange zest that are further elaborated on the palate with layers of blackberry compote, sweet clementine and milk chocolate. Only 256 bottles are available worldwide.
