Here’s where to go when you’re craving a quick doughnut fix

Dusted generously with sugar or cinnamon, glazed with lashings of melted chocolate or strawberry frosting, or stuffed to the brim with sweet curd or savoury sustenance, it is hard to go wrong with a box of freshly baked doughnuts. The ultimate comfort food, artisanal doughnut cafés have been popping up around the Klang Valley, much to our pleasure, specialising in making the holey treat. 

As such, we've compiled five of our favourite stores boasting fluffy, airy doughnuts and bombolini.

Halo Doughnut

Based in The Gasket Alley, Halo Doughnut is best known for its artisanal sourdough donuts. Classics include the maple bacon with candied duck and the brown butter glazed donut, but worth a try are also the Baby Cinnamon Affairs, bite-sized doughnut holes dusted with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom sugar.

Basket Break

Microbakery Basket Break is known for its small batch, sourdough bakes, especially its Sourdonuts. While specials change monthly, classic flavours include the Pistachio Mascarpone, Vanilla Bean Brûlée, and Boston Cream.

Donut Plan

Previously a pop-up, Donut Plan is now permanently based in Petaling Jaya’s Millenium Square. Handmade daily, its donuts come in innovative flavours such as Pandan Creme and Kinako (Japanese soy flour), but what intrigues this food writer the most are its savoury offerings, especially the Cacio e Pepe doughnut.

Sugar and I

Sugar and I specialises in bombolini, or stuffed doughnuts, which are available in boxes of four or eight. Mini versions are also crafted in the same flavours, which include Ovomaltine, Niko Neko Matcha, Mixed Berry Jam, and Nutella.

Dough by Meg

Dough by Meg’s fluffy bombolini are stuffed to the brim with delectable fillings such as sesame garlic cream cheese, lime cheese meringue, earl grey cream, and more. Its Baby Bombs, bite-sized bombolinis, come in boxes of seven different flavours.
