After a relatively quiet October, November opens with a bang. This month, there are plenty of movies to keep you on your toes. We’ll be treated with the highly-anticipated Chloé Zhao-directed Marvel movie, Eternals as well as Mirror’s Anson Lo making his debut. Other Hong Kong movies to check out this month include Limbo and Anita while Hollywood is offering House of Gucci and Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Mark your calendars and reserve your movie tickets because November sure is packed before the holiday season kicks in. Read on to find out what best new movies are coming to Hong Kong cinemas this November that you shouldn’t miss.

1. Eternals

Marvel Studios’ latest movie, Eternals introduces a new team of superheroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This story spans thousands of years and features a group of immortal heroes who have been forced out of the shadows, the Eternals to reunite in order to defeat mankind's oldest enemy, the Deviants.

Directed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, Eternals boasts an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lisa McHugh, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Kit Harrington and Angelina Jolie.

2. Satoshi Kon: The Illusionist

At the height of his success, mangaka and anime filmmaker, Satoshi Kon suddenly passed away in 2010, at the age of 46. He left behind a short and unfinished body of work, yet remains one of the most influential figures in contemporary Japanese culture.

Now, 10 years after his passing, his family and collaborates discuss his work while his heirs in Japan, France and Hollywood look back on his artist legacy in this movie, Satoshi Kon: The Illusionist.

3. Anita

A household name in Hong Kong, queen of Cantopop, Anita Mui was the definition of a cultural icon during Hong Kong’s golden age in the 1980s–1990s. With a career that began at the tender age of four in an amusement park, Mui dedicated her whole life to music.

But behind the stardom is someone with a story: her personal life, passion at work and the love for friends. Anita opens with her final concert and looks back on her life and legacy.

4. Ghostbusters: Afterlife

The next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe is here. Ghostbusters: Afterlife revolves around a single mom and her two kids who arrive in a small town. They soon begin to discover their own personal connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy that their grandfather left behind.

5. King Richard

Get ready to feel inspired and shed tears in King Richard, based on the true story of a family whose unconditional love and belief ultimately gave bright to two of the world's greatest sports legends. Starring two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith, King Richard follows Richard Williams who has a clear 78-page plan for his daughters, Venus and Serena to make history.

The two girls train hard on Compton, California's abandoned tennis courts rain or shine. They are shaped by their father's unyielding commitment and mother's keen intuition, eventually defying the odds and rising to the top.

6. Limbo

Limbo is a black-and-white action thriller about rookie policeman Will Ren and his partner, veteran cop Cham Lau. The two are pursuing an obsessive and especially brutal murderer of women. To lure this ripper with a hand fetish, they use the criminal Wong To—who needs to atone for her sins—as bait. But things didn't go as plan and Wong To finds herself falling victim to the serial killer.

This Hong Kong movie received a Best Actor nomination for Gordon Lam at the Asian Film Awards but two home two technical awards: Best Production and Best Sound.

7. House of Gucci

House of Gucci is Ridley Scott and stars Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Selma Hayek and Al Pacino. The movie is inspired by the true story of the family empire behind Italian fashion house, Gucci.

It will span three decades of love, betrayal, revenge and eventually murder by putting the focus on the turbulent marriage and divorce of Patrizia and Maurizio Gucci, the head of the then-head of the fashion house.

8. One Second

One Second is set in China during the Cultural Revolution, following a prisoner who escapes from a labour camp. He risks everything in his search for a stolen fil reel in which his long-lost daughter appears—for only one second. Soon he encounters the thief, an orphaned girl haunted by her own terrible loss.

One Second is beautiful, moving and deeply personal homage to the redemptive power of cinema from Zhang Yimou, 2021 Asian Film Awards Best Actor and three-time Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film. In her debut role, actress Liu Haocun also won Best Newcomer at the Asian Film Awards.

9. Encanto

Disney’s newest offering this month is Encanto, a new tale about an extraordinary family—the Madrigals—who live hidden in Colombia in a magical house and town called Encanto. The magic of Encanto blesses every child in the family with a unique gift, except for one: Mirabel.

But despite her lack of powers, Mirabel discovers that the powers surrounding her town is in danger so she decides to be her family’s last hope—as the only ordinary Madrigal.

10. Showbiz Spy

Anson Lo of Hong Kong boy band, Mirror will be making his film debut in Showbiz Spy. Lo will be starring alongside four actresses: Heidi Lee, Chloe So, Alina Lee and Summer Chan. Fans of Lo will be able to see the singer and actor cross-dressing as he joins a girl group in order to compete in a talent show.
