Cinemas have finally reopened in Hong Kong! Here are the movies you can’t miss this month

After a four-month closure following the fifth wave, cinemas in Hong Kong are finally open again. Movie enthusiasts and film buffs are definitely eyeing what movies to watch on the big screen.

Titles like Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and The Batman have already started screening as soon as cinemas reopened in late April. Oscar-nominated movies such as The Worst Person in the World and Madres Paralelas are also hitting the screen this month, alongside Marvel's long-awaited Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and K-drama Special Delivery.

1. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) new adventure begins when he meets America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), a teenager with the unique ability to open doorways from one universe to another.

In order to protect the barriers between universes, he recruits fellow Avenger Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) for help. What follows is a wild, mind-blowing adventure that sends Strange and his allies in a dangerous journey to alternate universes in the Multiverse.

2. Three Floors

Three Floors follows three families who live in a three-story building. Over a ten-year period, life forces them to deal with conflicts that affect the relationship between siblings, parents and children, husbands and wives.

3. Special Delivery

Park So-dam from Oscar-winning film Parasite stars in this new action movie as Eun-ha, a normal junkyard employee. But secretly, she also works as a delivery clerk who deals with unusual delivery requests.

One day, she’s asked to pick up a client but instead meets the client’s young son. As it turns out, the child has the security key to a bank account that holds a large sum of money and is now being chased by a gambling mastermind. Eun-ha is now tasked to protect the child.

4. The Worst Person in the World

This Academy Award-nominated movie follows Julie (Renate Reinsve) who is turning thirty but her life remains an existential mess. Her talents have gone to waste and her boyfriend Aksel (Anders Danielsen Lie) is pressuring her to settle down.

After gatecrashing a party, she meets the young and charming Eivind (Herbert Nordum). Hoping for a new perspective in life, she breaks up with Aksel and throws herself into a new relationship.

5. Ambulance

Desperate for money to cover his wife’s medical bills, veteran Will Sharp (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) seeks the help of his adoptive brother Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal), a career criminal. He offers Will the biggest bank heist in Los Angeles history and with his wife’s life on the line, Will can’t say no.

But when their getaway goes wrong, the two hijack an ambulance housing a wounded cop and ace EMT Cam Thompson (Eiza Gonzales) onboard. They now must evade a city-wide chase, keep their hostages alive and execute a daring escape.

6. Madres Paralelas

For her performance in this movie, Penelope Cruz received a Best Actress nomination at the recent Academy Awards. Madres Paralelas tells the story of two women who meet in a hospital room. Both are single and became pregnant by accident.

Janis (Cruz) doesn’t regret it and is exultant. But the teenager Ana (Milena Smit) is scared and traumatised. Janis tries to comfort her and they develop a bond which becomes complicated and changes their lives in a decisive way.

7. Some Like It Rare

This black comedy by Fabrice Eboué (who also stars) is a great watch for some much-need laughter. It centres around Vincent (Eboué) and his butcher shop which isn’t doing so well financially.

He intentionally runs over a vegan activist who vandalised his store and he uses his skills to discard the body. Soon enough, the shop is swarmed by customers who want his special ham.

8. Everything Everywhere All at Once

Written and directed by The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) and starring Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All At Once is a sci-fi action-adventure you shouldn’t miss.

An unlikely hero (Yeoh) is forced to use her newfound powers to fight bizarre dangers from the multiverse after an interdental rapture unravels reality.

9. Top Gun: Maverick

Following more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, it’s time for Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) to hang the towel. But instead, he finds himself training Top Gun graduates for a specialised mission that no pilot has ever seen.

His future hangs in the balance while the ghosts of his past catch up to him. This all culminates into a mission that will demand the ultimate sacrifice—if he’s willing to give it.
