What’s Powerlifting?

Powerlifting focuses on three main lifts: the squat, bench press and deadlift. The focus in this sport is to lift as heavy as possible in lower repetitions, building up to the heaviest one rep max (1RM) possible. During the competition, athletes get three attempts at lifting the maximal weight on the three exercises.

While powerlifters mainly focus on the core lifts, accessory exercises are important to help strengthen muscles that aid in stabilisation during the lifts in order to avoid injury and muscle imbalance.

What’s Olympic Weightlifting?

Olympic weightlifting has been in every Summer Olympic Games since 1920. Consisting of two main movements: the snatch, and the clean and jerk, the former is a wide-grip lift where the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one swift motion. The clean and jerk is a combination lift where the barbell is first lifted from the ground onto the front of the shoulders, followed by the shoulders to an overhead position, performing the jerk.

What’s Strongman?

Strongman was previously a term used to refer to circus performers who would perform strength-based performances such as steel bending, chain breaking and bent pressing. However, strongman now refers to a type of functional strength training that uses non-traditional heavy objects to build overall strength. Whether it’s using beanbags, 30kg natural rocks, tires, or strongman logs.

From powerlifting gyms, to Olympic weightlifting classes, and strongman classes, we list out the best weightlifting gyms in Hong Kong that’ll help you feel your strongest self yet.
