What’s the secret behind this Hollywood legend looking so distinctive? Having a fashion formula that suits her tastes, while taking risks by diving into different colour palettes. Oftentimes wearing a flamboyant designer piece can run the risk of overwhelming an individual, but for Yeoh, it makes her shine and especially due to the styling.

To celebrate this talented and stylish woman, we dive into the literal rainbow of looks that Yeoh has worn over the years, and analyse why they work:

Black

At the recent Balenciaga Couture autumn-winter 2022 show, Yeoh looked ultra-chic in an all-black ensemble from the fashion house. Despite black being a dark colour that can look flat, the silky fabric reflected light and added depth.

The pussy bow blouse added volume up top, the sleek skirt highlighted Yeoh’s figure, and the knife-point shoes cut through the bottom. For accessories, Yeoh aptly went minimal with waterfall earrings and sleek hair, both of which framed her face and kept the focus on the clothes.

Pink

This one shoulder dress that Yeoh wore alongside the Everything Everywhere All At Once cast was a playful choice that made her look radiant, due to the warm pink colour palette.

The cut-outs and feathers along the trim of the sleeve were fun without being fussy, the cuff worn on her opposite arm visually balanced the look, and her soft make-up and loose waves flattered the romantic, blush tones of the dress.

Green

Yeoh arrived at the 2022 Met Gala looking elegant in a green Prabal Gurung gown. The look created a trailing A-line silhouette, which was enhanced by three elements: the off-the-shoulder neckline, the structured cape and the flared mermaid skirt.

To draw the eye up to her face, Yeoh wore bright red lipstick and a striking necklace from Tasaki, made up of diamonds, pearls, sapphires and aquamarine—the latter which worked well with the gown, as well as the rest of her accessories, which included a diamond studded Richard Mille watch.

Orange

This zesty power suit from Off-White that Yeoh wore on The Today Show was a bold but fabulous choice, and the highlighter orange tones beautifully contrasted against the deep khaki Tory Burch coat.

Toning it down with black framed glasses and a matching black mask, Yeoh served major boss energy with this cool colour combination.

Taupe

Yeoh brought a slice of her role as Eleanor, the traditional yet über stylish matriarch of the Young family in Crazy Rich Asians, to the SAG Awards as she stunned in a feathered Elie Saab gown. It featured delicate silver embroidery on the bodice, and she emphasised the sparkle with more silver jewellery and accessories.

Dangling, spiral earrings were a flattering choice to complement the boat neckline of the dress, and she added edge to this delicate look with a chunky watch.

Red

We've seen Yeoh pull off a strong red lip, and she can pull off the colour head-to-toe, as she did with this dramatic Marchesa look from 2019 Critic's Choice awards. The delicate appliqué on her dress was offset with a men's watch, another Richard Mille.

By combining three styling choices she frequents, those being a monochromatic palette, a one-shouldered dress and adding a sturdy watch into her mix of accessories, Yeoh always looks polished.

Mint

Light pastel shades can accentuate dark features, and Yeoh glittered in a mint custom Barney Cheung number on the Amfar red carpet in Hong Kong back in 2019. The plunging neckline and floral embroidery suggested a princess vibe, but the belt, beaded bracelet, and again, a statement watch cut through to provide a smart element to the overall look.

By combining soft and strong elements often, Yeoh has a clearly defined style that embodies balance and boldness, and we look forward to more sophisticated looks from this actress in 2022.
