Gucci is definitely having a moment. With the release of House of Gucci in cinemas the world over, the Italian luxury brand has never been more relevant, or cool—thanks to the impeccable style on display.
But it’s another house icon that is set to take centre stage this year: the Gucci Bamboo 1947. A nod to the first bamboo-handled bag created by the legendary Guccio Gucci in 1947, it was an ingenious solution to the leather shortage post-World War II. In the following years, the Gucci bamboo bag quickly won the recognition of some of history’s most fashionable swans, including Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Diana, and modern celebrities like Beyoncé, Cate Blanchett, Pippa Middleton and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
This season, under the creative direction of Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, the Gucci Bamboo bag makes its return—but not in the classic form you’re used to.
The Gucci Bamboo 1947 joins the house’s signature Gucci Beloved lines as a new classic, and features a curved, streamlined shape with a turnlock and handle in the house’s iconic bamboo.
What’s more, you can make your bag your own by choosing (and swapping) shoulder straps—ranging from the classic Gucci Web to colourful leather options that echo the horse-riding theme.
And the iterations don’t stop there. The top handle bag will come in three sizes: medium, small and mini. Of course, the bags will be crafted from cuir leather and come in classic shades of white and black patent leather, and the small and mini will be available in vibrant hues likes bright orange, marigold yellow, pink, azure and bright green. Want something more precious? Crocodile and python skin options will also be available for the discerning Gucci collector.
