From K-pop girl group 2NE1 to Chinese superstar Jackson Wang, see what the most stylish Asian artists wore to one of the world’s biggest music festivals

Coachella has outdone itself this year with its most diverse line-up ever, featuring Asian musicians from all around the world.

The California music festival, which returned after a two-year hiatus, saw sets and surprise appearances from artists and bands from South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and more, largely thanks to music label 88rising. Some highlights? The reunion of K-pop legends 2NE1, Jackson Wang showing up and going shirtless, and Hikaru Utada’s first-ever performance in the US.

These Asian artists didn’t just impress with their musical talents, though; in the spirit of Coachella, they also brought their eclectic style to the world’s most Instagrammed musical stage.

Below, see how stars of Asian descent flexed their festival fashion prowess in our round-up of unforgettable Coachella 2022 outfits.

2NE1

K-pop girl group 2NE1 pretty much broke the Internet when they reunited on stage for the first time in six years. The quartet dazzled in edgy outfits that reflected their personal style.

CL toughened up her lace Alexander Wang catsuit with a spiked bra and a leather jacket, while Dara sported an Alexander Wang crystal pinstripe shirt with matching capri pants, out from which peeked out the waistband of her Supreme knickers. Minzy, too, sparkled in a cowl-neck chainmail halter top, also from Alexander Wang, while Park Bom performed in her signature look: a minidress, this time crafted from ruffled tulle and sequins.

Another surprise musician on the line-up? Jackson Wang, who became the first Chinese singer to perform at Coachella. He channelled Michael Jackson in both his dance moves and his style, when he wore a single red glove to contrast his black blazer, tank top and slim-fit pants.

Peggy Gou

With her wardrobe of matching patterned sets and Hawaiian shirts, nobody does easy, breezy festival fashion as effortlessly (or as regularly) as Peggy Gou. This year, however, the South Korean DJ made her return to Coachella as its resident Catwoman: she wore an adorable Vivienne Westwood cat corset (also loved by Blackpink’s Lisa), whose girlishness was offset by Gou’s baggy trousers and platform boots from the trendy Korean fashion label, TheOpen Product.

Nicole Zefanya, better known as Niki, made history as the first Indonesian singer to headline Coachella—and she did so with wicked style. Belying her catchy, soulful tunes, the artist nailed the dominatrix trend with a maroon bustier featuring leather harnesses and a collar, which she matched with cut-out cargo pants with distressing and even more leather straps all throughout. Niki completed her monochromatic outfit with a dramatic leather coat and chunky platform boots.

Milli was another Asian artist to make her Coachella debut this year: she became the first solo Thai musician to take to the stage, and eat mango sticky rice while doing so. The rapper’s fiery set was only outdone by her red-hot ensemble, which comprised a cutout wrap top with matching sheer pants (reminiscent of Vietnamese label Fanci Club’s viral Nadia set), over which she layered a cropped puffer jacket. Milli finished her look with the coveted Nike Air Force 1 Low “Mesh Pocket” sneakers.

Rina Sawayama

Rina Sawayama looked every bit a pop princess in her crystal bra, bedazzled denim jacket and feather-trim hot shorts, all from New York label Area’s Spring/Summer 2022 haute couture collection. Britney Spears’ iconic denim-on-denim outfit was definitely on the British-Japanese singer’s moodboard, and that was only further confirmed when Sawayama finished her look with a pair of cowboy boots.

South Korean singer Bibi simmered on stage with perhaps the most futuristic outfit at Coachella. She donned an all-white look featuring a metallic breastplate, a draped skirt and a pair of knee-high Off-White boots.

Yoon Mirae

Korean-American rapper Yoon Mirae joined Bibi on stage with a similarly textural ensemble, this time with a beaded Simone Rocha bustier layered over a red Mugler tulle bodysuit. Mirroring Bibi’s choice of footwear, Mirae sported a pair of graphic over-the-knee boots.

Has Michelle Zauner found her new favourite colour? It sure seems that way, because the Japanese Breakfast frontwoman took to the stage in yet another lemony look to rival her Grammys get-up. This time, her outfit came from Glenn Marten’s Diesel Spring/Summer 2022 collection, comprising an open-knit crop top and a smocked organza skirt. To match her Euphoria-worthy, crystal-embellished eye make-up, Zauner accessorised with gleaming, sculptural drop earrings and a spiked chain bracelet, both from Panconesi.

Japanese-American pop sensation Conan Gray was a hot pink vision with his custom Valentino ensemble, comprising a billowing, diaphanous dress, sheer gloves, bell bottom pants and platform boots. If the fuchsia hue seems familiar, that’s because it was the defining colour of Valentino’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection and has been officially added to Pantone as “Pink PP”.

Arooj Aftab

As the first Pakistani artist to headline Coachella, Grammy-winning singer Arooj Aftab made a statement in an avant-garde black top with oversized ruffles and spikes as she performed her soulful, Sufi-inspired tracks.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

J-pop queen Kyary Pamyu Pamyu brought her kawaii aesthetic to Coachella in a custom costume featuring a glossy, bubblegum pink dress with a mini hoop skirt and its very own stars.

Hikaru Utada

Speaking of J-pop, superstar Hikaru Utada also made a surprise appearance on stage to perform their hits like First Love in a bleached denim belted dress.

Rich Brian

Indonesian rapper Rich Brian sported not one but two full looks from Kenzo’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection by Nigo: the first was a workwear denim jacket, preppily styled with a white shirt, a vest, and an embroidered tie whose poppy motif was also featured on Brian’s white shoes; and the second was a bright blue denim outfit with an all-over floral print.

Up-and-coming Indonesian rapper Warren Hue was the biker-chic Boy of the Year with his vintage Motoboss motorcycle jacket with padded shoulders and mesh panels. Hue’s look was toughened up with cargo pants, high-top sneakers and his signature single blue glove.

South Korean hip-hop trio Epik High returned to Coachella for a second time with laid-back looks. Our highlights were Tablo’s pants, made from repurposed Nirvana band tees, as well as Mithra Jin’s Bali-ready bucket-hat-and-Hawaiian-shirt combo.
