Discover how to enhance your home’s feng shui energy while creating a more harmonious living space with your pets

We welcome pets into our homes for countless reasons–companionship, security, emotional support, and the pure joy that comes from sharing life with another species. Many pet owners report reduced stress, lower blood pressure, decreased feelings of loneliness, and increased opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities

Moreover, homes become warmer, more vibrant spaces when shared with these loyal companions, and it is an added bonus when they also contribute significantly to the energy and harmony of our homes through the principles of feng shui.

Master Li of Feng Shui Culture explains that dogs are symbols of loyalty and protection, and their presence itself indicates good luck and fortune. Regarded as heavenly guardians, dogs not only keep guard of your household belongings, but also protect and stabilise the energy within a home.

“When dogs bark at seemingly nothing, it is believed that they are dispelling negative energy (sha qi) from your environment and maintaining peace and safety in your home,” Li shares.

“Dogs are wonderful for infusing a home with lively energy,” concurs Kathryn Weber of Red Lotus Letter. “Their liveliness–barking and wagging their tails happily–means we have an active home even when we aren’t there, making our homes more ‘yang.’”

Weber also adds that cats symbolise financial and opportunity luck, whereas fish bring wealth, birds symbolise success, and turtles signify longevity.

Pets are often looked on as members of the family, and displays of love [toward them] are always wonderful feng shui,” she continues.

Housing.com suggests considering the energy associated with different colours, such as calming blues and greens that can create a peaceful atmosphere in your home with your furkids.

Dogs are associated with earth elements in feng shui, thus making earth tones–brown, yellow and orange–particularly complementary to their naturally down-to-earth energy, creating a sense of stability and grounding in your space.

On the other hand, cats are associated with the wood element in feng shui, making green and blue naturally harmonious with cats’ nurturing energy, creating a balanced environment that supports their well-being.

Thoughtful colour selection for your pets can also extend to the accessories we choose for them, as the right colours can enhance different aspects of energy flow for both the animal and your home.

For owners looking to enhance prosperity and social harmony, purple or green collars can help activate these energies while adding visual interest to your pet’s appearance.

Meanwhile, yellow ribbons or bandanas are excellent choices for promoting health and balanced energy, while red accessories may amplify reputation and “fame” energy according to traditional feng shui principles.

Furthermore, black-coloured accessories can enhance a cat’s natural mystical qualities and independence, while red or orange items may stimulate activity and playfulness–perfect for encouraging exercise and engagement.

For felines who might benefit from more tranquility, white or cream accessories promote calm and clarity, helping to create peaceful spaces for rest and contemplation.

Since dogs represent earth energy in feng shui philosophy, Housing.com advises that locations in front of doors or windows should be avoided, as these areas typically have disruptive energy that can make your dog feel unsettled or on guard.

Instead, choose a stable, quiet corner away from drafts that provide security and comfort, while allowing your dog to observe household activity–this satisfies both their need for safety and their desire to remain connected to family movements.

Feng shui practitioners also recommend considering the southwest or northeast areas of your home for dog beds, as these directions are traditionally associated with earth energy and can strengthen your dog’s natural elemental connection.

As cats require both yin (restful) and yang (stimulating) environments to maintain their physical and energetic balance, Li recommends placing cat beds in the east or southeast corners of rooms to boost vitality and health, aligning with their wood element nature.

The north direction is also considered favourable for cats, as water supports wood in the feng shui elemental cycle, bringing more energy and liveliness to your feline companion.

“Opt for wood, bamboo or fabric materials for cat beds to complement their natural energy,” Li advises. “Conversely, avoid metal-based beds, which clash with the wood element and may weaken their constitution according to feng shui principles.”

He also suggests keeping cat beds away from cluttered or high-traffic areas like doorways or hallways, which can disrupt their sense of security and peace. Instead, place cosy beds in quiet areas for relaxation, or sunny spots near windows for stimulation.

Feng shui principles believe that plants are living entities that symbolise growth and vitality, and their placement can influence the flow of chi in your home. While purifying the air for a cleaner and more hygienic environment for both you and your furry friends, it’s important to opt for varieties that are non-toxic for them too.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is an excellent choice for pet owners practicing feng shui.

It symbolises luck and good fortune in traditional practice and works best when placed in east or southeast directions to amplify the wood element. Moreover, spider plants are non-toxic and hardy, thriving in indirect light while remaining safe if curious pets decide to nibble on their cascading foliage.

Besides that, the areca palm (Dypsis lutescens) represents the wood element in feng shui, symbolising growth and prosperity in your living space. Ideally positioned in eastern, southern, or southeastern areas of your home, this elegant, non-toxic plant is also a safe choice for both cats and dogs.

ASPCA also recommends boston ferns (Nephrolepis exaltata) as suitable for adding lush greenery while purifying the air in pet-friendly homes, as they are completely safe for pets that are tempted to play with the attractive fronds.

Promoting rejuvenation and balance in feng shui practice, these beautiful plants work particularly well in humid environments like bathrooms or shaded spaces, creating pockets of refreshing energy throughout your home.
