For those with a penchant for Japanese fare, you’ll be sure to revel in this week’s restaurant offerings. Begin the week with an unagi kaiseki dinner, featuring Japanese freshwater eels at Unazen. Then, book a spot at Mikuni and savour chef Keisuke Uni’s Hina Matsuri inspired bento set, in honour of the annual doll festival. Before the week ends, head to Loof Bar for a last hoorah before the beloved rooftop bar closes its doors for the last time on February 27.

1. The Marmalade Pantry

Head to The Marmalade Pantry’s Downtown outlet for its two-course executive set lunch to tide you over your work day. Begin the meal with a hearty bowl of creamy truffle mushroom soup, topped with house-made her croutons and crème fraiche. Then, choose from a tantalising array of mains, including grilled scallops with saffron risotto, a rich and creamy dish flavoured with lobster stock and topped with tender Japanese scallops; and succulent spice-marinated lamb filled within a pocket of fluffy pita bread. 2. Unazen

Unagi lovers are sure to delight in Unazen’s six-course unagi kaiseki dinner, exclusively available on February 24. This traditional multi-course meal will be guided by waitress Ms Reiko Amano as she enlightens guests with background information on each dish. First, guests are invited to whet their appetite with refreshing yuzu sake from Okuhida-Sake brewery. Then comes the star of the show—grilled unagi prepared two ways. The first option is simply flavoured with salt to let its natural flavours shine, while the second is coated with Unazen’s signature kabayaki sauce made with soy sauce and mirin. Book here.

3. Loof Bar

Head to this beloved rooftop bar one last time, before it shuts its doors for good on February 27. Get to indulge in local and Southeast Asian flavours while surrounded by views of the CBD. Among the menu highlights are Loof’s original ramly, a decadent burger with a succulent Australian patty wrapped in a fluffy omelette between soft buns; twisties charred corn with curry mayo and shaved cheese; and tender cream cracker crust pork chop accompanied with homemade tomato sauce. Complement the meal with Southeast Asian-inspired cocktails such as Loof Bubble Tea (Reyka vodka, Hendricks gin, rum, orange liquer, sour plum, tapioca pearls); Cyn Chai Negroni (gin, sweet vermouth, Campari, Cynar, chai); and Firecracker (gin, watermelon, chilli, citrus). 4. Book Ahead: Mikuni

Celebrate Hina Matsuri (doll festival) this year with chef Keisuke Uni’s inspired lunch bento set. Dig into the likes of Mikuni’s signature sea urchin shell, featuring Hokkaido sea urchin and lobster jelly; grilled amadai served with XO-infused dashi-based sauce; and buttery Otoro (fatty tuna) from Nagasaki. The A5 Tochigi Wagyu sushi roll is a hot favourite that sees tender wagyu from Japanese Black breed cows of the Tochigi prefecture paired with sweet burdock. 5. Book Ahead: Koma

While we wait for a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) with Japan to open, we can reimagine ourselves in Japan with Koma’s latest menu. Its March menu showcases a line-up of gourmet delights curated with premium ingredients from Miyazaki prefecture, the South-eastern coastal region of Japan. Standouts include deep fried charcoal butter chicken seasoned with strawberry salt and shiitake powder; udon topped with umami-filled sea urchin, truffle and tobiko; and spicy soft shell crab roll.
