From seafood-filled varieties to innovative combinations, here are the best dumplings for this year’s Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Festival, or Tuen Ng Festival, is one of the most celebrated holidays in Hong Kong. The festival occurs on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which falls on June 19 in 2026. The holiday is defined by two rituals: dragon boat racing along the Victoria Harbour and eating glutinous rice dumplings.

Both customs stem from the legend of Qu Yuan, a Zhou dynasty poet and minister who drowned in the Miluo River. Legend has it that admirers dropped rice into the river to protect his body from fish, a practice that evolved into today’s festivities.

Traditionally, these dumplings are filled with red bean, lotus seed, or mung bean pastes for sweet versions, and dried seafood, legumes, and salted egg yolks for savoury ones. This year, Chinese restaurants across the city are elevating these classics with premium ingredients, honouring tradition while staying relevant to the contemporary palate. Keep reading for some of our favourites.
