1. Tansen Izakaya

Nothing beats indulging in a comforting izakaya meal after a long day. For those in this neighbourhood, there's no better place to do that than Tansen Izakaya. Known for its kushiyaki and its signature Tansen clams, this cosy Japanese eatery is a foolproof spot for those who crave the heartwarming and satisfying simplicity of izakaya fare. 

While there, do not miss its various kushiyaki sticks, the aforementioned clams, and rice bowls, such as the Salmon Maguro Chashu Don.

2. Itek Itik

A newcomer on the scene, Itek Itik entices with its numerous renditions of the duck. One of its most popular is the Curry Roast Duck in aromatic and creamy curry broth. The other highlight is nasi lemak duck curry.

Dishes sans duck include Smoked Kampung Chicken and Portuguese Egg Tart.

3. New Ipoh Nga Choy Chicken Rice 1977

From duck to chicken: If you didn't know, New Ipoh Nga Choy Chicken Rice 1977 is a Klang Valley institution serving a hearty meal of chicken rice with a choice of steamed and roasted chicken.

4. Texture by C3 Lab

Those with a sweet tooth should have this minimalist café on their radar. Located in Atria Shopping Gallery, Texture by C3 Lab is a pleasant spot for a quick bite, coffee, and desserts. Must-tries include the signature C3 Roll, croffles, verrines, and the sweet pumpkin soup.

5. Provisions

With a facade of terracotta colour that extends into the interior, Provisions' soothing design is just one of their standouts, the other being its homemade sourdough which enjoys a substantial measure of fame amongst the urbanites. The bread is often paired with house-made French butter, jam, and sous vide kaya.

For heartier sandwiches, the fluffy Japanese milk loaf with egg-dijon-mayonnaise and classic grilled cheese sandwich served with tomato soup are recommended. Then there is the sourdough French toast with ricotta, jam and honey, should you have a sweet craving.

6. Li Restaurant

Founded by the same trio behind Provisions and located just next door is Li Restaurant that serves Asian dishes with an inventive twist.

For lunch, start with the charred local vegetables with garlic and steamed egg custard with mapo mushroom. Then choose from its selection of rice bowls including the House Rice Bowl comprising chicken, chilli mayo, pickles, ginger scallions, and an egg. The coconut panna cotta makes for a nice finale to the meal.

For a light dinner, opt for the Rojak "Panzanella", its version of the popular Malaysian snack with crispy stale bread, and finish on a sweet note with the Bruléed Figs With Tamarind Caramel and Yoghurt.

7. Nicholes Cakery

This quaint cafe makes everything from scratch, from the burger buns to the pastas. Decadent desserts include the tiramisu, fresh scones, and burnt cheesecake.

8. Wild Yeast

A labour of love for founder Terrance Chong, Wild Yeast's sourdough breads are scrumptious and comes in a number of styles. At the top of our list are the country sourdough and the cranberry with black sesame sourdough. Also take the opportunity to savour one of its sandwiches—we recommend the Chicken Major With Guacamole—and wash it down with homemade iced calamansi based on a recipe by Chong's mother.

9. Dáo

It's all about a comforting bowl of tau fu fah (soybean pudding) at Dáo. Originating from Ipoh's famous Woong Kee Beancurd, Dáo's tau fu fah is served with an option of four syrups: ginger, brown, white, and chrysanthemum.

The menu also reflects more modern favourites such as the soy soft serve as well as matcha-infused soy milk drinks.
