Read on to find out how Loubier is bringing the Belgian luxury brand to the next century

Delvaux is the oldest fine leather goods house in the world, known for its savoir-faire, uncompromising craftsmanship and the outstanding quality of its creations. At its helm is Jean-Marc Loubier, who was appointed as CEO in September 2021.

To Delvaux, he brings extensive knowledge and decades of experience in the luxury space, implementing innovative ideas and strategic insights to further the brand's rich legacy. Under his guidance, the Belgian institution is experiencing a global renaissance as its unique brand story and iconic designs—such as The Brillant, The Tempête, The Pin and The Lingot—continue to capture the hearts of shoppers in Europe as well as new clientele in Asia and the Middle East. For instance, Malaysians have been making a beeline to Delvaux’s first-ever store in Malaysia at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur since it opened in August 2023.

Why does Delvaux’s story continue to resonate with its audience nearly a century since its conception? How is Delvaux revolutionising the luxury space?  And what's next for the heritage brand? In this interview with Tatler, Loubier answers these pressing questions and shares more about his respect for Delvaux’s 200-year history and unique approach to ensuring the brand's long-term growth around the world.

Welcome to Malaysia! It must be your first visit back to the country since the pandemic. Can you share how you felt seeing the first Delvaux store in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur?

I have not been to Kuala Lumpur for a long time, but I used to come quite often. For me, it was always the plan to bring Delvaux to Malaysia. In fact, I was very involved in designing the store while I was back in Brussels. We devoted a lot of time to make sure that the store is a meeting point or embassy of Delvaux and represents our strong identity; we also wanted to ensure that it tells the story of the city, Kuala Lumpur. It is important that each store is unique and specific to the location to make the encounters within it that much richer. I am glad to welcome our friends in Malaysia to this new store.

Delvaux has a rich history as the oldest fine leather goods house in the world, with a well-deserved reputation for its excellent craftsmanship. It has seen a lot of growth outside of Europe. Why do you think Delvaux’s story resonates with clienteles around the world?

We belong to a world that everybody knows: luxury. But we come with a very strong signature, which is authenticity, integrity and sincerity. It is easy for people to understand what we stand for because Delvaux has been practising it for nearly two centuries.

Delvaux was founded in 1829, making us the oldest luxury leather goods company in the world and we have been designing and crafting leather goods in our workshops since then without interruption. We are the inventor of the modern handbag; Delvaux registered the first-ever patent for a leather handbag in 1908. This is our foundation, a tree trunk from which foliage can grow in the form of our beautiful bags. For instance, the Brillant bag made history when it was introduced at the Brussels World Fair in 1958 and is now one of our most iconic designs.

Our bags are not ‘It’ bags or bags of the year; they are long-lasting investments that are passed down from generation to generation. Delvaux’s legacy is a moving one, a piece of history that continues to make history. We continue to make these connections and build momentum with our friends around the world.

From global quotas for bags and spending ratios to VIP treatment, accessibility in luxury is a big topic in the industry at the moment. Can you share your opinion on the subject and how Delvaux is navigating it?

I don’t believe in categorisation or segregation of our clientele based on their spending or making them wait for hours in line outside our stores. For me, I believe there is exclusivity in inclusivity. What does that mean? It means that our goal is to share what we do and the values that go into our creations with as many people as possible. We want everybody to be able to walk into our stores and discover Delvaux with the help of our staff members, who act as ambassadors for our brand. We hope to create a welcoming ambience to facilitate natural, relaxed, and enriching conversations with people to learn about their preferences and expectations and how we can fit into their lifestyles.

From there, it is individual choice whether they would like to make a purchase. Even if they decide against it, we want them to remember our interesting story and the time they spent in the store.

What is the key to Delvaux’s longevity?

At Delvaux, we bring tradition to the future. Nowadays, creativity is everywhere, but creativity without a specific goal can be difficult. Instead, we apply our creativity to something concrete, our signature bags. At the same time, we are making sure that our practices are constantly evolving and progressing, especially in terms of craftsmanship and manufacturing.

Can you tell us more about how Delvaux's collaborations with artists fits in with this approach?

These days, we see collaboration everywhere in the same way we see luxury bags everywhere. Again, we come back to the same question: what does Delvaux stand for? For instance, Delvaux most recently worked with Belgian artist Kasper Bosmans on our spring/summer 2024 collection. The reason why we chose to work with Kasper is because he has an interesting perspective on heraldry, where a family, city or country was represented by a symbol, like a crest or flag. As a brand steeped in history, we wanted to continue our conversation about identity and how we define ourselves.

I would like to clarify that our collaboration with Kasper is deeper than the present day notions of the word. It is less about combining two styles but fully uniting two ways of working to create something purposeful and substantial. We started a creative dialogue between Kasper and more than 50 of Delvaux’s artisans; they worked together over a period of one year to create the collection. We also spoke at length about how we wanted to present the collection at Paris Fashion Week to invite the public into this exchange. The exhibition was called Mutualism to embody this ‘1 + 1 = 3’ approach.

What direction you would like to take with Delvaux in the next decade?

Delvaux has established itself as a leading luxury leather goods brand, in a sense that everything we do is meaningful, impactful and referential. We want to continue an active legacy, which means that we are preparing our company to enter the third century with a clear vision and mission. That includes nurturing our core strengths—a mastery of leather—and expanding that to manoeuvre other materials, such as metal parts, felt and wicker, to become a leading luxury accessory brand.
