Discover the silent auctions and charity initiatives that will help bring some cheer to those in need this season

While the Tatler Ball has always been a night of celebration, a cornerstone of the evening is fostering the spirit of giving back. Amidst the fun and festivities, Tatler Malaysia aims to raise funds for carefully selected beneficiaries and organisations to make an impact on the community at large.

In 2021, Tatler Malaysia raised a total of RM179,133 to help 250 children and their families in Sabah as well as supporting humanitarian efforts across Malaysia. In 2022, Tatler Malaysia raised over RM307,125 for charity, almost double what was raised the previous year, with the funds going to three amazing charitable organisations—Make A Wish Malaysia, Yayasan Chow Kit, and Orphancare Foundation—all organisations dedicated to empowering and uplifting children from underprivileged communities across Malaysia.

This year, in sticking with the Tatler Ball tradition, Tatler Malaysia is partnering with three charitable organisations–ROSE Foundation, Hospis Malaysia, and Cancer Research Malaysia–to bring some cheer to those in need this season.

About the charities

ROSE Foundation

Above ROSE Foundation

ROSE Foundation (ROSE) is an approved tax-exempt non-profit organisation established in 2019 and based in Kuala Lumpur with a vision for a cervical cancer-free future for women in Malaysia. ROSE’s mission is to deliver HPV PCR self-sampling cervical screening to women in Malaysia using Program ROSE (an acronym for Removing Obstacles to Cervical Screening) while prioritising the underprivileged and underserved women communities.

ROSE Foundation was awarded the prestigious global UNIVANTS of Healthcare Excellence Award 2022. This international awards programme recognises teams that collaborate across disciplines and transform healthcare delivery and, ultimately, the lives of patients for its outstanding achievements, from problem-solving with an innovative approach to driving the transformation of healthcare delivery with measurable impact on patients, clinicians, and the entire health systems.

To date, over 25,000 Malaysian women, most of whom are from the underserved and underserved population, have been screened using Program ROSE and over 200 potential cervical cases have been identified and linked for treatment at over 30 government hospitals.

Hospis Malaysia

Above Hospis Malaysia

Hospis Malaysia is a charitable palliative care organisation providing evidence-based domiciliary palliative care to patients and families living in the Klang Valley. Each year, they treat approximately 1,700 patients, primarily in the comfort of their place of residence. Care is extended to patients of any age, gender, culture, religion, or social standing, to ensure that its patients and their families can continue to maintain a good quality of life, free of preventable physical and emotional suffering despite a serious progressive illness such as cancer, organ failure and certain degenerative neurological conditions.

In the practice of palliative care, the clinical team will work with the patient to determine his/her goals of care and support the family and caregiver to achieve this. The patient’s physical symptoms are managed, and the patient and family are guided through the expected journey of the illness. Family and caregivers are empowered with caregiving skills so that the patient can be cared for at home, often the preferred place of care.

Hospis Malaysia is also a leading palliative care teaching and training centre for healthcare workers in the Asia-Pacific region, offering teaching and attachment programmes to undergraduate and post-graduate medical students from the country’s leading medical schools. As part of their specialist training, most palliative care specialist trainees from the Ministry of Health Malaysia spend a significant amount of their community training at Hospis Malaysia.

Cancer Research Malaysia

Above Cancer Research Malaysia

Established in 2001, Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY) is the only non-profit organisation in the country dedicated to researching cancers that commonly affect Malaysians and the people around our region. Their scientists, in collaboration with local and international researchers, have consistently progressed over the years in understanding and preventing such cancers.

Cancer—the big ‘C’—continues to be a stigma, only spoken about in hushed whispers; how it’s bad karma, how much it costs, and that nothing could be done. From 2012 to 2023, Malaysia anticipates a 49 per cent increase in breast cancer cases. To add, Malaysia has a much lower five-year survival rate compared to other Asian countries at only 63 per cent, whereas South Korea is at 92 per cent and Singapore is at 80 per cent. Confronting this stigma head-on, CRMY has been reversing this language of cancer, transforming the big ‘C’ to a little ‘c’, and they plan to develop tools backed by good research to ensure that we can truly fight cancer on all fronts.

Their research has already led to the discovery and implementation of new and effective breast cancer prevention strategies, and their priority is ensuring that Asians are not left out in the fight against cancer. Together with their partners and supporters, CRMY’s vision is a future free of the fear of cancer. Funding for their lifesaving research depends on donations and sponsorship from the public and corporations.
