Transforming Indonesia’s pre-owned designer fashion landscape may seem like a daunting task–but not to Ardine Nakety. The 30 year-old founder of Belle&Kate shares her aspiring plans to make shopping an inclusive and sustainable experience for all

How I’m Making It is a series in which Tatler speaks to influential individuals about their unique journeys and what keeps them going.

At first glance, Ardine Nakety is every bit the glamorous and sophisticated girlboss. Her makeup is flawless, her hair is well-coiffed and her stylish outfits are always accessorised with a designer handbag. But underneath that glossy veneer lies a savvy businesswoman with an indefatigable spirit.

Nakety’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2016 when she astutely identified a gap in the market: the lack of luxury consignment platforms in Southeast Asia. “My motivation stemmed from my own passion for top designer creations and helping friends acquire their dream bags, which was a real challenge at the time,” she shares.

Belle&Kate was thus born. Seven years and one pandemic later, it has evolved into a multi-platform luxury goods company. For luxury lovers, Belle&Kate is the ultimate fashion destination: shoppers can take their pick from an impressive collection of pre-owned bags and accessories from Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior. Belle&Kate also offers consignment and trade-in services for those looking to declutter their wardrobes and give their designer pieces a new home.

Nakety credits the flourishing company to her two biggest supporters: her parents. The name Belle&Kate carries profound significance; ‘Belle’ is a tribute to her mother, Bella, while ‘Kate’ comes from Nakety’s last name to signify the intertwining of her identity with her venture.

As founder, Nakety’s goal for Belle&Kate is to create a safe and inclusive environment for pre-owned luxury shopping. “Gaining the customer’s trust is our hardest challenge, especially when selling luxury goods online,” she notes. “That’s why we rigorously and painstakingly authenticate the items we curate–to give our customers unwavering confidence and ensure that luxury shopping becomes a seamless and enjoyable experience for all.”

And the results speak for themselves. A favourite amongst the well-heeled crowd, Belle&Kate boasts an impressive online presence with nearly 120,000 followers on Instagram, a website and a mobile app. Offline, it has two brick-and-mortar stores: one located in Jakarta's prime area of SCBD and more recently, in Singapore on Orchard Road.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Nakety is on a mission to continue growing Belle&Kate while staying true to the brand’s ethos. At the heart of it is sustainability, as reflected in the company’s tagline ‘Release, Revolve, Relove’. “Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us; it's a guiding principle,” she shares. “We're committed to reducing waste, promoting responsible consumption, and fostering a community that appreciates the beauty of pre-owned luxury.

Below, the 30 year-old entrepreneur shares her thoughts on the rise of vintage fashion, the importance of persistence and how she makes it work.

What does a standard work day look like for you?
Ardine Nakety (AN): I like to start the day with a touch of sweetness–that means breakfast with cookies, bread and coffee. After that, I review my agenda and my tasks for the day. As founder of Belle& Kate, I oversee various aspects of the company's operations, from strategic decisions to day-to-day management. In essence, my role is to nurture our company's growth, foster a collaborative team culture and to make sure we continue to provide personalized service to our customers in the ever-evolving world of pre-owned luxury fashion. I also carve out time to seek new opportunities and build meaningful connections through networking. It's about keeping our ship on course while staying open to exciting possibilities and relationships.

What do you think are the qualities of a good leader?
AN: Effective leadership hinges on adept people management, because a leader is nothing without a trusted team and good support system.

What’s an idea or thought you had recently that you found interesting?
AN: Lately, I've been quite intrigued by the surging fascination with vintage luxury items. It's fascinating to see how they’re gaining momentum. Vintage fashion is staging a stylish comeback, challenging the notion that being fashionable means buying brand new items.

Risks: should you take them?
AN:
I'm someone who doesn't shy away from risks. I believe they can be worthwhile if they match your goals and the potential rewards outweigh the drawbacks. However, it's crucial to pause and assess your situation before leaping into the unknown. Your instincts also play a role; sometimes, that gut feeling can guide you when making significant decisions.

What is your advice to fellow entrepreneurs?
AN: It's all about being persistent. Keep moving forward, even when obstacles arise. Dream boldly, think expansively, and never underestimate yourself. Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses; they're part of being human. Understand that struggles are inevitable, but everyone possesses unique strengths and weaknesses. That's why I believe in enlisting the help of others on this journey. Finding a partner who shares your goals and complements your abilities is crucial in pursuing your dreams.

How do you achieve a work-life balance?
AN:
That can be challenging as an entrepreneur. The busy year of expanding Belle&Kate in Jakarta and Singapore was especially overwhelming for me. Ideas, fears, and future plans often came simultaneously, and there was constant need to focus. My remedy for maintaining a balance is to embrace rest. Taking time to rejuvenate helps me establish boundaries and separate work from personal life in this dynamic journey.

How do you unwind and unplug?
AN: My sanctuary is my hometown, Yogyakarta. As someone who values family, reuniting with my big family and spending time with them brings me immense joy. In Yogyakarta, one of my cherished retreats is Kaliurang, a highland area offering breathtaking views of mountains and natural landscapes. There, I find solace while sipping coffee, taking in the beauty that surrounds me from the lush mountain to the refreshing river. It's the perfect escape.
