Bored of the LBD? Take notes from the Instagram style star’s comfy yet chic outfit borrowed from the boys

On most days, you would be hard-pressed to find Calista Cuaca in a dress. Unlike her mother Jamie Chua with her wardrobe of floral frocks and tulle skirts fit for a lady, Cuaca has demonstrated a taste for all things comfortable, opting for separates like crop tops and baggy pants to create androgynous, laid-back ensembles.

It should come as no surprise, then, that the flame-haired fashionista did away with the classic little black dress (or LBD, for short) on a recent date night with her boyfriend Joshua.

Instead, Cuaca assembled an outfit that stayed true to her tomboyish style: a crinkled, cropped black shirt from Dion Lee and a matching pair of shorts also from the New York fashion label. Her choice of accessory was a Prada Re-Edition 2005 bag, whose nylon façade boasted a slight sheen also seen in her outfit.

Cuaca’s look is notably rooted in menswear, with collars and cuffs that offered a tailored finish. Easy to throw on and offering plenty of freedom to move around, her outfit is a refreshing twist on the typically high-maintenance date night look, right down to the shoes: not heels, but a pair of Jacquemus square-toe strappy sandals with padded footbeds.

Cuaca doesn’t compromise on comfort, and for good reason. “Confidence is the best styling trick I’ve learnt from my mother, to just be comfortable and to be myself,” she previously shared with Tatler Singapore. “My mum has always said that with confidence, you could even look amazing in a potato sack.”

So how did Cuaca glam up for the special occasion? With jewels, of course. She flaunted a pair of sparkling hoop earrings by Singapore brand Yuli Inc Fine Jewellery, as well as the Aqua diamond ring from S.Maneephand Jewelry.

The latter jewellery piece is a sentimental choice that keeps Cuaca connected to her mother, who owns another long diamond ring from the Bangkok-based label, but with straight, sharp lines to contrast the waves seen on Cuaca’s ring.

The most intriguing accessory was all Cuaca, though. Peeking out from under her collar was a seemingly blood-splattered pearl necklace—one of the limited-edition pieces produced in a collaboration between Chinese labels Shushu/Tong and Yvmin. If one thing is clear, it’s that when it comes to style, Cuaca doesn’t believe in being boring.
