The Instagram superstar also spills on her new favourite designer bag, her style inspirations, and the Y2K fashion trend she will never wear

At only 23, Calista Cuaca has amassed a wardrobe that most people can only dream of. That’s probably not surprising, given that she’s the daughter of the stylish socialite Jamie Chua.

Although she shares her mother’s appreciation for luxury, Cuaca’s style is a lot harder to pin down; the outfits that she shows off on Instagram (@xcalikins) to over 311,000 followers run the gamut from athleisure chic to ladylike elegance.

Her versatile looks are the result of her exploration in style, encouraged by her mother. “My mum has always said that with confidence, you could even look amazing in a potato sack,” says Cuaca.

Below, the social media superstar tells us more about her style must-haves, her fashion inspirations and the most important styling trick she learned from her mother.

Please introduce yourself.

I’m more of a free-spirited person. A quote from I’m a Realist by British indie rock band The Cribs (also tattooed on my ribs) completely describes my personality: “I’m a realist, I’m a romantic, I am indecisive and that’s about it”.

How would you describe your personal style with three hashtags?

#glamlife #keepingitreal #sorrynotsorry

Who are your style inspirations?

One of my role models is Emma Chamberlain.

What is one style quote that you live by?

My mum has always said that with confidence, you could even look amazing in a potato sack. I always remind myself that whenever I feel insecure about a new look I’m trying!

How has your mother influenced your style?

Definitely, she’s opened me up to trying out new styles. Many would say our styles are polar opposites, but as I grow up, I find myself more allured by her more feminine, dreamy dresses. Maybe it’s just because she looks gorgeous in them!

Do you ever borrow clothes or accessories from her closet?

All the time! Raiding her wardrobe is one of my favourite pastimes.

What is the best styling trick that you learned from your mother?

Confidence is the best styling trick I’ve learnt from my mother. To just be comfortable and to be myself.

What is your favourite fashion item that you’ve received from her?

On a family trip to London, she got me this gorgeous Chrome Hearts Rosary necklace that I love to use to layer accessories!

Your mother is famously a fan of Hermes Birkin and Kelly bags. What is your favourite Hermes bag?

I haven’t explored Hermes much, but between the two, I would say I lean more towards the Kelly bag. The versatility of carrying it in your hand or as a crossbody is something I appreciate.

What’s always in your bag?

My go-to Dior tattoo lip tint! And hand sanitiser of course, cleanliness is key.

What is your go-to look for a night out?

A little black dress on days I feel sweet, or a bralette with the baggiest pants for when I feel fiercer.

What is your preferred footwear?

Definitely sneakers! Always appreciate comfy footwear, especially on long days. But some sky-high heels never fail to give me that confidence boost I need some days.

What is your best recent discovery?

St. Ali Orthodox Instant Coffee, a quality instant coffee! Hard to find this in Singapore, but mixing it with my favourite oat milk satisfies my need for that cafe-quality iced oat latte when I’m tight on time.

What is your style pet peeve?

Having to describe what my style is! And being pigeonholed into some particular style.

What is the last purchase you made?

The Chanel 22 bag, instantly fell in love with it when I first saw it. Secured it right before flying off and it was the perfect travel buddy!

What are you lusting after right now?

I’ve been eyeing a couple of vintage Chanel bags that just seem to compliment any outfit possible, maybe time to raid my mum’s closet?

What is something you would never wear?

Low rise skinny jeans.

How has your style changed through the years?

I would say that I used to stick to a style that I was very comfortable with, without exploring other options. Throughout the last couple of years, I’ve pushed myself to explore different styles that I’ve grown to love.

What is your most prized possession in your closet?

Probably my white ceramic RM07-01, I love how a white watch pops on the wrist.

What are your plans for Mother’s Day?

Our favourite thing to do as a family is to sit down to a nice hearty dinner and just talk for hours. Since we all live separately now, catching up and bonding is always so important to us.
