See how the kings of K-pop have broken red carpet conventions over the years with their bold, fashion-forward outfits

While they may not always be recognised for their musical talents and prowess as performers (we’re looking at you, the Grammys), nobody will deny that BTS knows how to work the red carpet.

Over the years, the kings of K-pop have experimented with their style, straying from the classic, all-black tuxedoes they wore to their very first Grammys to don floral coats, polka-dotted jackets, and even hoodies at prestigious award shows. Just as they continue to break records with their music, the stylish septet have been known to break conventions with their outfit choices.

Below, we take a closer look at BTS’ style evolution on the red carpet.

Although they were once again snubbed at the 2022 Grammys, the septet still won Best Dressed on the red carpet with their custom Louis Vuitton suits from Virgil Abloh’s final menswear collection. To jazz up their monochromatic looks, which came in a harmonious palette of deep blues, browns and white, the K-pop stars accessories with crystal brooches pinned to the top button of their suits. V, meanwhile, showed off a blooming origami boutonniere—a twist to the traditional tailoring accessory.

A month before they were named Louis Vuitton ambassadors, BTS proved that they were the perfect fit for Virgil Abloh’s rule-breaking menswear at the 2021 Grammys. The stars showed up in a mix of tailoring and athleisure looks from the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2021 collection, defying formal dressing conventions with their sneakers and, in RM’s case, a hoodie.

3. In Tailorable at the American Music Awards, 2021

The Korean boyband looked smooth as Butter in their second set of outfits at the 2021 AMAs (the first set, comprising grey Louis Vuitton suits, left less of an impact). Wearing custom looks by Seoul-based menswear brand Tailorable, each member pulled off the bright yellow hue in their own way; Jungkook and J-Hope accessorised with tinted sunglasses, while Suga sported a satin shirt that matched the lapels of his jacket.

For the 62nd Grammy Awards, the K-pop boyband did away with tuxedos and opted for classy turtlenecks and coats that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a K-drama lead actor’s wardrobe. Their outfits were courtesy of Bottega Veneta, which was the go-to fashion brand for sophisticated minimalism under the helm of Daniel Lee.

Besides taking home two Billboard Music Awards, the K-pop group also showed a more playful side to their red carpet dressing, especially with rapper Suga clad in a polka-dotted jacket.

BTS showed that they were definitely on board with Kim Jones’ softer and more feminine version of Dior menswear when they arrived at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in the brand’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection. It was a refreshing departure from their all-black tuxedoes: V sported a light pink suit, Suga wore an elegant jacquard coat, and J-Hope opted for a playful look from the Dior x Kaws “Bee” capsule. Jones would later design custom outfits for the boyband for their worldwide tour in 2019.

Although they would go on to flaunt ensembles from international luxury fashion brands, BTS made a subtle nod to their South Korean heritage at their very first Grammys. The boyband arrived in classic tuxedoes that were specially created for them by Korean fashion brands JayBaek Couture and Kim Seo Ryong.
