What is your skin type?

Mixed but on the oily side.

Who influenced your skincare routine?

My mom. When she was younger she used to always bathe under the sun and as a result had sunspots on her cheeks. Through a consistent skincare routine, she was able to remove all those dark sunspots. So growing up she insisted on the importance of protecting your skin from the sun and having a proper skincare routine.

How did you find a skincare routine that works for you?

I just go through a trial and error process. My skin is always changing depending on my hormones, stress levels, the country I’m in or the weather. So it’s constantly ever-evolving. I try to listen to what my skin needs at that moment and regularly visit my dermatologist for checkups. I still have a lot of work to do to improve the health of my skin but I keep trying.

More than a skincare routine though, I think what’s very important for anyone is what we eat and how much we sleep. If I can, I try to fit in eight hours of sleep every night. It really shows on my skin when I’ve had good sleep and when I haven’t.

What I eat makes a big difference too. As much as possible, I eat more greens and fruits to have a healthy glow. And drinking a lot of water is truly the key to it all.

What are your holy grail products?

I cannot live without my break out skincare routine. I always have it with me in case of emergencies.

I use clindaze, it’s a pore minimiser toner that has clindamycin in it. It’s great to prevent further acne breakouts.

I also apply the insta natural cleanser and serum. And always have a pimple patch with me for emergencies.

Can you take us through each step in your routine?

My evening skincare routine changes in terms of the brands I use. I like to switch it out every few months and have always been open to trying new products.

The brands I use vary from Sensai Kanebo, Roche Posay, Estee Lauder, Lierac, and Caudalie to even Atomy Absolute (a Korean skincare brand my friend gifted me with).

No matter the brand, I always make sure there’s vitamin C included in one of the products and I follow the same routine. I first remove my makeup thoroughly using Garnier micellar cleansing water for my face and unrefined coconut oil to especially remove my waterproof mascara from my eyelashes. I use reusable pads to remove the make-up and dirt.

I then proceed to wash my face with a facial cleanser. After which I use lotion, toner,  serum, moisturising cream, eye cream, coconut oil for my eyelashes and eyebrows and lip balm for my lips.

When applying skincare, depending on the product I either pat or apply it gently by using the tip of my fingers in a circular motion always going in the upwards direction. For eye cream, in particular, I do not rub, I simply pat gently with my fingers.

Twice a week, I also add to the routine a concentrated brightening essence from Caudalie called Vinoperfect.

On days I am breaking out I will add my emergency break out skincare routine.

Do you also use facemasks?

I use face masks every two weeks. Depending on my skin and what it needs I’ll either use a pore minimizer mask or moisturizing mask or brightening mask. If I have events or particular work requirements, I increase my mask usage to once a week. Other than facemasks, I also make sure to do diamond peel once a month or every few months with my dermatologist.

What is a skincare hack you think we should know?

I wouldn’t say this is a skincare hack per se. But this was life-changing for me when I discovered it and started using it. I sometimes have breakouts, especially on my chin. I’m always so tempted to pop the pimples which cause scarring. I now use Rael’s miracle patch or the mighty patch on certain pimples. They are some form of hydrocolloid stickers. I leave it overnight and it works so well. My skin doesn’t dry up from it and I don’t get any acne scars.

Another one is facial massage. I learned it as part of my vocal warm-ups in theatre and did not realise how helpful it is to incorporate it into your skincare routine.

Do you have a beauty horror story?

None in particular. I’ve really made sure to have a good dermatologist by my side to guide me.

How often do you practise skin fasting?

I practice this quite often. I’ve even gone through months without a skincare routine and just used a cleanser to wash my face. I try to do a few days, even a week of skin fasting every month.

Are there any skincare rules you’ve broken that have done wonders to your skin?

Maybe just the fact that sometimes I can go for several months without skincare. Given my line of —where I have make up on quite often—giving my skin a break and letting it breathe has done wonders.
