What is your skin type?

I have normal-combination skin. On lucky days, I can go out without a sliver of make-up on. On exceptionally stressful days and in-between seasons, my skin can get quite dry and my T-zone rather oily.

Who or what influenced your skincare routine?

I first got the idea of skincare from my two grandmothers, both of whom had stellar skin quality lasting until their later years. I remember going to Hong Kong at a very young age and overhearing my grandmother needing to buy her Shiseido skincare as soon as we landed.

As I grew older, through trips abroad and pop culture, I became absolutely enamoured by everything Japanese and Korean – skincare and beauty included. In my 20's, I often experimented with Japanese and Korean drugstore brands.

Do you have a beauty/skincare horror story?

I had a major allergic reaction to heavily-scented fabric conditioner once and it left my whole body covered with small bumps and rashes for 3 months. My face was spared, at least (phew). Medication didn’t help, but virgin coconut oil.

How did you find a skincare routine that works for you?

I can’t talk about the pandemic without talking about motherhood as well. Now that I’m mostly at home and taking care of a toddler, I find myself reaching more for products that can bring me back to a particular place, trigger a particular memory, and give me a rich, luxe experience at home. It’s a very personal sensory process that I enjoy every night.

Ultimately, I still think there has to be a balance of everything – skincare, diet, sleep, exercise, etc. Even where I am mentally [can] affect how my skin will look like.

What products do you consider a beauty 'holy grail'?

Chanel Hydra Beauty Micro Serum, N1 de Chanel Revitalizing Serum, and Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Serum.

How do you incorporate these products into your evening skincare routine?

I remove my make-up using Huxley’s Secret of Sahara cleansing oil and double cleanse with three clearing foam. Lately, I’ve been using the N1 de Chanel lotion, serum, and cream (all from Chanel’s latest sustainable line with up to 97 per cent natural ingredients). I try to do very simple (only seconds-long) facial massages while I’m at it. On lazier days when I just want to use one skincare product, I usually go for Estee Lauder’s ANR, Shiseido’s Ultimune Power Infusing Serum, or Chanel’s Hydra Beauty Micro Serum.

Do you use facemasks?

I do, but only maybe once every two weeks or whenever I can remember! Papa Recipe, Dear Klairs, CosRX, and Lululun are some of the brands with sheet masks that I enjoy.

How often do you practise skin fasting (a break from skincare)?

I don’t intentionally practise it. . .since there are really some days when I simply forget my skincare and go straight to bed. This usually happens when I’m utterly exhausted from work or childcare (especially during those early baby days). I do let my skin breathe often when it comes to make-up—I only use foundation or base make-up when absolutely necessary.

What's a skincare rule you've broken that have done wonders to your skin?

Going through a completely natural/organic route. I’m generally iffy about invasive treatments, but I’m still raving about Belo Ulthera (which is non-invasive) years after they let me try it. I did it before I got pregnant and my face did not bloat at all during my pregnancy in 2019.

What is a skincare hack you think we should know?

Drink a lot of water, get enough sleep, and take care of your mind as well!
