Cover After helming Care.com for 14 years, techpreneur Sheila Lirio Marcelo decided to take things slow and try new things. She ends up co-founding the Web3 startup, Proof of Learn

The global health crises may have put the world on halt but not the growth of Web3. Sheila Lirio Marcelo, one of the purveyors of digital technology, embarks on a journey to the uncharted world of the metaverse

The last couple of years have opened the eyes of many to the alternate world of the metaverse. It has gone from an arena known only to tech innovators and gamers to becoming very much part of the vernacular, a world accessible to us all. But, questions remain. What else is out there? What else will be possible? And why should those of us outside of the gaming, developing, and trading industries care?

Filipino American techpreneur Sheila Lirio Marcelo, co-founder and CEO of Proof of Learn, is keen to dig deeper into Web3 and provide some of those answers. After watching a documentary featuring Lola Vergie, a grandmother in her sixties from Cabanatuan who regularly plays the play-to-earn NFT game Axie Infinity, Marcelo realised that being in her fifties was not a barrier to exploring Web3. “I thought if we can improve the experience, maybe more people can take advantage of this,” says Marcelo. “Plus, my line of expertise is the mass consumer market, and I am very passionate about women being in this male-dominated industry. I like pioneering in these ventures primarily because I could help other women get into things.”

Marcelo was born to a landed family, but her own path has been less traditional. Marcelo graduated magna cum laude from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts with a degree in economics and earned MBA and JD degrees with honours from Harvard University. Her opportunities to make a name for herself were born of hurdles in her personal life: she gave birth to her first child, Ryan, during her undergraduate degree while at the same time struggling to find care for her father, who had suffered a heart attack. Her second child, Adam, was born while she was finishing her postgraduate studies and teaching on the side. These difficulties prompted her in 2007 to establish Care.com, the leading online marketplace connecting babysitters, nannies, caregivers, and dog walkers with families seeking these services.

During her 14 years at the helm of the platform, Marcelo was listed as one of the top 40 entrepreneurs by the Boston Business Journal (2009) and one of the ten most influential women entrepreneurs by Fortune Magazine (2009). She also received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2010 and was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011, among many other accolades. She is the second Filipino alum of Harvard Business School to receive its alumni award in 2014 for her work as founder, chairwoman, and CEO of Care.com; and later that year, she was given one of the highest honours for Filipinos: the Pamana ng Pilipino, the Filipino Heritage Award, by the late President Benigno Aquino III.

In 2020, Marcelo decided to slow down. She sold her company, made travel plans, and prepared to spend more time with her husband Ron and their two sons, Ryan and Adam.

But fate had other plans: she stumbled across the Lola Vergie programme and realised her next life phase involved learning more about Web3 and in turn, helping others better understand.

In December 2021, Marcelo co-founded Proof of Learn, a Web3 education company that seeks to be the leading educational platform in the metaverse. It is targeted at Web2 developers, hoping that they become future builders of Web3 and immerse themselves in crypto and NFT trading.

“It brought me back to education, which I’ve always wanted to do,” Marcelo says, looking back at her journey that started with working in a Web1 company, followed by founding a Web2 company, and now venturing into Web3. “I guess it’s not a surprise to be where I am now, following the evolution of the internet,” she says. “I’ve always believed in it; I was one of the early believers.”

Marcelo was introduced to her co-founder Kevin Yang by Gabby Dizon of the gaming guild Yield Guild Games (YGG), whom she met at an NFT convention in the US. Through YGG, Proof of Learn will reach almost 1,000 scholars, who will have access to a curriculum designed by top Silicon Valley Web3 developers. Marcelo and Yang hope Proof of Learn will provide millions of developers around the globe with new skills that could lead to life-changing employment opportunities and help promote the growth of communities in the metaverse.

To deliver this vision, Proof of Learn’s first project is Metacrafters, a learn-to-earn open-world platform where NFT are earned, minted, and traded by completing Web3 tutorials, all in the form of a role-playing game. Whenever players finish a course and complete an assessment, they earn a Proof of Learn NFT: a badge which harnesses the power of the blockchain to provide transparent credentials, giving each a certification they can show to employers in the future. Taking advantage of tokenisation—one of the benefits of the blockchain—when players finish a course, they earn tokens known as creds, which are convertible to the cryptocurrency USDC. There is also a governance token used for blockchain voting that has utility within the game. Treasure NFTs can be minted by players in-game and traded within or outside Metacrafters.

I just believe that if we can solve the issue of finding potential earnings, people can reach their dreams and achieve what they want

The gamification is further enhanced by game lore inspired by the history of blockchain. The game’s hub is called The Academy, and questors are sorted through Houses inspired by Layer 1 blockchain protocol; the goal is to create thriving sub-communities of Web3 developers.

“We decided to build it this way because coding is lonely, and we want something super engaging and community-based,” says Marcelo. “Back in the Sixties and Seventies, when computer science was first taught in liberal arts, we put [computer science students] into the engineering department. It was a four-year course, even though you don’t need four years of schooling to learn to code. But what’s effective in that environment is that there were affiliations like clubs, fraternities, and the like. So we try to mimic what we have in real life.”

Marcelo and her team have set up certain guidelines, which include treating each other with respect and promoting the spirit of camaraderie. She believes the sense of belonging will serve to foster community and encourage students to stay on track. “We’re working with different blockchain protocols embedded in a magical game that makes it very engaging to learn about Web3, with a sense of belonging for the crafters—the students,” Marcelo says. “We believe that the combination of the learn-to-earn plus this very engaging game will help them get higher completion rates.”

Above One of Marcelo’s goals is to empower women especially in the oft male-dominated world of technology

Marcelo prides herself on being ahead of the curve. Some have said that when she started Care.com, its business model was too early and competitive, but its success suggests otherwise. It always is a matter of timing the readiness of the consumer market for the next big thing. With Proof of Learn, she thinks there is a void to be filled when it comes to learn-to-earn platforms.

“The pandemic changed how the world perceived online education,” Marcelo says. “It became the standard as opposed to the exception; hence we knew that the virtual world and its role in education would be super important. I also don’t think learn-to-earn would take off today without play-to-earn being in demand. The latter is easier to grasp as learning takes work, but it doesn’t mean learning can’t be fun. Lastly, there is a growing demand for Web3 developers, and I always look at what needs our business can try to fill.”
