These Asian doctors and entrepreneurs are driving innovations in skin, hair, makeup and more

Taking care of how you look has a positive impact on your self-confidence: the perfect shade of lipstick lifts the spirit, a great haircut paves the way for a great day, and a lengthy nighttime skincare routine can bring calm. And when you feel good because of how you look, you also feel you can do anything: you can conquer the day’s work, you can light up a room, and you can make others feel happy, too. The beauty leaders on Asia’s Most Influential list recognise the profound impact of presentation and so, through their clinics, salons and tech companies, drive innovation in their field, with cutting-edge laser treatments or AI-backed beauty solutions. For these leaders in the industry, beauty is never just a surface-level pursuit.

Technology powers beauty at Alice Chang’s Perfect Corp. Leveraging advancements in artificial intelligence and augmented reality, the tech solutions provider has pioneered a number of skin, makeup and face technologies, which have been used by brands such as Estée Lauder, MAC and Tarte. Skincare AR, for example, uses deep learning technology to provide real-time assessment of wrinkles, spots and texture, which then helps evaluate the effectiveness of skincare routines. Meanwhile, Face AI provides accurate facial mapping for realistic makeovers with actual beauty products.

For Estée Lauder, Chang’s YouCam technology, which has been installed in over 8,000 of the beauty company’s devices, has helped customers try on different lipstick shades in seconds. Perfect Corp’s collection of YouCam apps for makeup, nails and selfies is also available for download so beauty lovers can try various looks and styles on their mobile phones. The popular apps have over a billion downloads.

Marion Caunter is dedicated to creating beautiful hair with two mane-focused companies, Hairplay Salon and Mare. The latter is a natural extension of the salon, which she co-founded with celebrity hairstylist Shaun Yap, and also a solution to a personal crisis. When Mare was launched in July 2022, Caunter shared on Instagram: “More is More Hair Vitamins was an idea that really started brewing when I realized I was losing more hair than usual during the numerous lockdowns of 2020/2021… I ultimately figured out that my body was likely lacking essential nutrients. After talking to clients at @myhairplay and receiving feedback from my followers, I realised this was a common problem that needed to be addressed.”

And thus, the perfect cut and style can now be supported by Mare’s hair serums, scalp oils and the More is More Hair Vitamins, a biotin-enriched berry-and-peach drink that encourages growth and maintenance. Outside of her entrepreneurial pursuits, Caunter is a social media star (with 550K followers on Instagram) and a style leader who is often seen in elegant creations topped off by, of course, stunning hair.

Outside of her triumphs in beauty, the medical director has also established Beauty Beyond Borders, the company’s foundation that conducts dermatological missions for marginalised communities, including persons with disabilities. “Seeing how happy and grateful that we are able to help them is rewarding. It’s something that I always wanted to do, to reach out and to give time to others. It brings me immense joy and a sense of purpose in life,” she said to Tatler.
