Marion Caunter

A style icon and a long-time darling of the entertainment scene, Marion Caunter is the co-founder of Hairplay Salon and Marna Ro Capital

Profile

Graduating from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a degree in broadcasting and electronics, Marion Caunter found her calling as a television presenter after her stint as a reporter for Milwaukee’s WB 18 Channel, covering stories about the local youth community. She was also in the advertising department of Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM, known as the home station for American entertainer Rick Dees.

A renowned TV presenter in Southeast Asia, Caunter began her illustrious career in the local entertainment scene by putting her nose to the grindstone. She first hosted 8TV’s 15-minute talk show, The Quickie, before moving on to programmes like One in a Million, The Biggest Loser and Channel V’s Poparazzi, as well as ESPN and E! News Asia channels. And while she has taken a step back from the jet-setting lifestyle of a television host, Caunter has never been one to remain idle.

To this fashion chameleon, hair is the ultimate finishing touch to her style, so it’s no wonder the budding entrepreneur co-founded Hairplay Salon with celebrity stylist Shaun Yap in 2013. She also launched various clothing lines and enterprises under Marna Ro Capital. To date, she remains one of Malaysia’s most recognisable personalities, and uses her social media presence to bring a more positive awareness to issues she feels strongly about, such as mental health.

Caunter is the wife of SM Nasarudin Nasimuddin, Naza Group’s group executive chairman, and they share three children.

When Caunter first started out as a television presenter in her early 20s, she stuck to her guns as a host refusing to conform to complaints about her ‘not being Malaysian’ enough. Fans still write to her about how they would tune into the segments she hosted to improve their English.
