The Colourette and Fresh Formula CEO shares her thoughts on body positivity, as well as her admiration for Lizzo, Rihanna, and Ashley Graham
It is a truth universally acknowledged that today's generation offers a wider perspective on social or personal issues. Of course, this is also due to the arduous attempts of our ancestors to ensure that we have access to all the rights we are privy to this day. Wearing rose-coloured glasses is the only acceptable reason for a man to claim that we are now in the best of times in society though, especially concerning judgment and self-acceptance.
For many, it is a rather unfortunate but common occurrence, especially in Filipino family gatherings, that greetings translate into subtle taunts on appearance. Good if it's something pleasant like "you've grown tall," but if it's something like "you've gained weight," it leaves a sour taste in the mouth. What more for mothers who undergo natural changes in their physical appearance due to pregnancy and childbirth?
According to Nina Ellaine Dizon-Cabrera, founder and CEO of Niv Della Beauty Innovations, Gen.T honouree and a mother of two, the first step is to accept these changes. Self-love and acceptance will come as time goes by.

Below, Dizon-Cabrera shares her thoughts on body positivity, especially for mothers.
Can you tell us your process for embodying a positive mindset? Was it difficult?
Nina Dizon-Cabrera (NDC): My body has gone through a lot. Growing up, I was always the chubbiest girl in our group of friends and was subjected to bullying, which I just shrugged off. I have always been confident with my body ever since because my mother has never made me feel insecure about it. I liked wearing shorts, dresses, and sleeveless tops. I've been fat. I've been skinny. I bore two children in this world, so name it. I've seen my body transform into it.
When the pandemic came, I had a lot of body struggles. I gained weight so fast and drastically, and the entire internet witnessed that. Again, I was subjected to body shaming because of it. Because of these changes, I have learned to love my body a little more.
I realised that bodies change, and that's okay. I may not be where I want to be in terms of physical strength and fitness, but that shouldn't take away my love for my body. I can love it now as much as I will love it when I reach my goal. I don't have to hate it to improve it. I can always embrace whatever state I'm in and just enjoy the journey.
Remember that your fitness journey will never be linear, and that's just how it is.
