The New Zealand-born Hollywood director Taika Waititi shares his top picks for restaurants in Auckland that serve delicious food in a laidback, fuss-free atmosphere

Taika Waititi is a lot of things. He’s the funny man behind such comedy gold as What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Hollywood director behind Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder and Jojo Rabbit. He even modelled for Hermès at New York Fashion Week this year.

But no matter where his fame takes him, at the end of the day, Waititi—whose real name is Taika David Cohen—is a guy from New Zealand who loves the outdoors and a good meal with friends at a cosy neighbourhood restaurant. In fact, he recently showed off his home country in Tourism New Zealand's latest campaign, There’s No Place Like It On Earth, promoting Aotearoa to audiences around the world.

Below are some of Waititi’s favourite restaurants in Auckland, New Zealand, that he loves to visit when he’s back on home turf.

1. Honey Bones

Taika Waititi calls this is low key eatery his “favourite place”. It keeps the brunch crowds happy with sweet and savoury dishes, many of which take inspiration from Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours. One of its signature dishes is the Merguez (pictured above), an indulgent bowl featuring tzatziki, fenugreek potato, merguez sausage, baharat eggplant, a fried egg, dukkah and fresh herbs. Yum.

2. Lilian

Lilian is the kind of restaurant that anyone would be glad to have in their neighbourhood. Inspired by European wine bars, its interiors feature burgundy leather seating and textured ecru walls. Its menu is seasonal, featuring dishes such as woodfired pizza, clams with nduja and anchovies with caramelised onion butter.

3. Prego

Prego, which Waititi rightly calls “an institution”, is a stalwart in Auckland’s dining scene. It serves comforting Italian cuisine in a lively but non-pretentious atmosphere. The indoor dining room is buzzing seven days a week, while its courtyard out front is a local staple for drinks and light bites during Auckland’s warmer months—during which vibrant bougainvillea blooms brightly against the restaurant’s white wall.

4. SPQR

Waititi definitely has a type when it comes to restaurants: a relaxed atmosphere and no-fuss vibes with simple dishes done exceptionally well. SPQR ticks all those boxes. Locals love this laidback Italian restaurant for long, wine-fuelled lunches, and its menu features classics like eye fillet carpaccio, homemade parpadelle with bolognese, chicken saltimbocca and a tiramisu that is apparently “to die for”.
