The best way to travel like a local, is to ask a local. In this series of travel guides, we ask creatives and insiders from our global community to show us their city, their way
Payal Shah's life is, in a word, dreamy. The jet-set designer is the founder of L'Dezen, a high-end jewellery brand whose A-list clientele includes the likes of Rihanna, Chrissy Teigen, Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama. You could even say that Shah is something of an A-lister herself, as she can always be found at the most coveted events—and she always looks good doing it.
Shah was born and raised in Hong Kong, and as L'Dezen continues to expand, she's been spending a lot of time in New York City.
So naturally, we asked her to share some of her favourite places to eat, drink, mingle and find inspiration in The Big Apple—from classic New York supper clubs to her favourite plant-based restaurants.
Titsou Bar at Hotel Barriere Fouquet's
Titsou Bar is located inside the new Fouquet's Hotel in Tribeca. Titsou Bar evokes the 1920s and 1930s with its candlelit tables, exclusive ambiance, and dazzling interiors. It draws inspiration from the famous speakeasy Bar Marta at Hôtel Barrière Fouquet.
The bartenders mix innovative cocktails at the marble-topped bar, lit by Art Deco-style lamps, resulting in lively conversations and unforgettable evenings. As a sophisticated speakeasy behind shelf-like doors, this spot is great for date nights and small groups and I always impress the person I am with when arrive here.
Semma Restaurant
Hungry for some spicy goodness? Prepare yourself for a taste explosion of epic proportions. Semma Restaurant has my heart with its divine South Indian cuisine. The dosa they serve is a spicy symphony that sets my taste buds dancing with joy. No kidding, this Michelin-starred joint is a South Indian paradise.
Since I usually order everything on the menu, I save myself for this meal. It is almost impossible to get reservations here because of the festive interior and the excellent cuisine. Pro Tip: Call or walk in and see if there is space at the bar, as the tables are usually full.

Dante West Village
Ah, the West Village—my playground for indulging in some good old-fashioned people-watching. And Dante is where it's at! Sit on their outdoor patio and enjoy the scene, it's like the ultimate Alo Yoga commercial.
Among the plant-based dishes here, the cauliflower head is my favorite. This place makes it super delicious and their tasty drinks menu makes is a total win-win situation.
Madison Square Garden Stadium
Sports lover or not, you can't resist the magnetic pull of Madison Square Garden Stadium. Cheering for my momentary favourite NBA team or being part of a live concert crowd—it's an electrifying experience that leaves me feeling alive and buzzing with excitement.
While you are [in New York], see what games are playing or if anyone is performing!
Verōnika
It is a place for late-night conversations, moments over shared meals, and serendipitous encounters hidden within Fotografiska New York. In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful restaurants in New York City.
Starters include complimentary in-season crudites served on ice with a tangy dip and a tasty bread selection. Vegetarian and vegan options are plentiful, and I keep returning for the vegan schnitzel. We always end the night with a nightcap at Chapel Bar, which is equally beautiful.
Dennis Basso
Dennis Basso is the epitome of style and sophistication, and guess what? My own jewellery brand, L'Dezen, is also available there! My creations are honoured to be displayed alongside such stunning collections of gowns and dresses, by a New Yorker himself. Take a stroll down Madison Avenue and check out the beautiful store if you want to play dress up.
Zero Bond Members Club
I choose Zero Bond when I am looking for exclusivity and a refined ambiance. It's my sanctuary for catching up with friends, enjoying a wide range of delicious dishes, and getting the best service.
You can find it on Bond Street, which is quite easy to get to, and some nights here are tame, while others can really get things started. My favourite night here is always a Thursday, when I sip on my favourite 'Madre' mezcal.
Chelsea Piers
As the sun sets over the city, I find my happy place at Chelsea Piers. The stunning views of the skyline and the calming waterfront make it the perfect spot for a leisurely walk or jog along the waterfront. It's my way of finding peace amid the urban buzz. It's like the city takes a chill pill, and everyone's just there to breathe in the beauty. In Spring, the weather is perfect for long runs as well.
Pioneer Works
Art and culture aficionados, rejoice! Pioneer Works in Brooklyn is a sanctuary for creative souls. It has three floors of interconnected studio, performance, exhibition, and multipurpose spaces, which cultivate collaborations past the boundaries of traditional institutions by placing makers and thinkers in proximity to each other.
There is always something interesting exhibited or happening on their website, and it takes you out of the city into an inclusive paradise. Check out the space followed by a dinner at Bird of a Feather in Williamsburg.
Birds of a Feather
It's an authentic Sichuan restaurant in Williamsburg that's perfect for a dinner with friends to experience Chinese classics in a clean, trendy environment. It's also very affordable and suitable to all diets.
You'll want to try a little of everything at Birds of a Feather—the food is very good and best enjoyed with a group. Restaurants like Birds of a Feather are starting to catch on in the US, as they reveal what great Chinese food is beyond food courts, buffets, and takeout. Ok, my mouth is watering now!
